RegCure
I see this being offered on here as a good tool. I have installed this, ran it and it says I have over 1500 problems. You are not able to fix these unless you buy it and get a registration number.

I can't Install YahooIM as I get 404 Not Found error and when I search the net it says a fix for this is to download RegCure as well.

Am I doing something wrong or is there another "free" regcleaner out there?

Thanks

You might want to check out Regvac. It's not free but they do give a free demo period.

The "problems" registry cleaners find are not really problems at all. They do absolutely no good, do not improve speed or efficiency, and risk serious damage to the registry. They are all a scam. Don't fall for it.

Elvandil I have heard that as well...here's my thing tho....I have deleted a lot of programs....and the remnants are still in the registry......my proble with the IM 404 Not Found....I believe has something to do with the reg as well......so is there something out there that will remove no longer needed strings in the reg?

It's completely unnecessary to remove unneeded strings. Many maintain settings in case an app is reinstalled, but having others there does no harm at all and does not slow access.

But if you have a specific problem, surgical strikes ar still appropriate for specific problems.

So what is the problem with the IM and when do you get that error? That is generally an error for a web page that is not available and probably has nothing to do with the registry.

404 Not Found
Ok, I had downloaded Yahoo! IM (8.1 I think) and it ran for a few days....then I don't know what happened I got the 404 Not Found error and I couldn't do anything. I uninstalled, deleted cookies and tried it again and same problem. I tried to even do the Beta 9 version but same problem. I ended up deleting everything in the registry....but it still happened and after the fact, I found on the net what you are saying. It will download the program, but I am selecting "Run" and when it tries to install it, I get that error and it won't do it. I have downloaded as a file but same thing. I have pulled out my hair.....LOL I can't find out why this keeps happening.....

Elvandil, do you think you may have an idea about the 404 Not Found problem? If it is looking for a web-page, why would that be happening running it straight from their site....unless the page it was looking for is down or something. I will try to run it again.....

Crystal Clear, not a problem. Go to START, RUN, type in regedit, and when that opens up, go to to FILE and then probably the second choice down is EXPORT.

Hope that helps.

Try Tune-Up Utilites. You get a 30 day trial period, and the program is great for cleaning out your computer. It has a registry editor which can search your registry for problems.

Find it here: www.tune-up.com
