Any input here about Ad-Aware 2007? Is SuperAntiSpyware a good replacement? Thanks.

I've heard many good reviews about it. | | Senior Member with 429 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Location: Earth Experience: Beginner | | As stated, I read many posts on Lavasoft's site. I do realize the instability issues may be from individual problems with hardware and other apps. I was only going by what I saw. Possibly we both need to get 2007 and try it. In any event I may be leaving Lavasoft, any ideas for an acceptable replacement? I presently use AVG Pro and Spybot along with the passing Ad-aware...Thanks. | | Distinguished Member with 9,752 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Experience: Mac Addict | | I would try using it, I have and I haven't had any problems with it at all. If it doesn't work, just uninstall it. | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun | | I have read also where people installed 2007 and had troubles and went back to SE.
Seeing how there site always had definition files for SE and 2007 and they still do I downloaded the SE definition file for the free version that I would think would be the same because it always was in the pass. | | Distinguished Member with 3,730 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Experience: Intermediate | | ad-aware i went back to the old one many months ago and still get updates. | | Senior Member with 429 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Location: Earth Experience: Beginner | | I have Ad-Aware SE Personal(free), and the last update was 12/27/07. When trying to update, it says there are no new components. If you can download the update from this week, then I have a problem. Have been updating consistently for over a year. Is there a way to manually get them and install them? | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun | | You sure your still getting updates golferbob on Ad-Aware SE Personal(free) because they stopped at the end of the year and my last update was also 12/27/07 and when I checked on the newer updated dated 01/2/08 it said no new components.
I then went to here http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ and got the SE1R211 02.01.2008 update.
If they are the same as in the pass all def files can be download here.
They have always had the same def file for all SE version and now all 2007 versions.
But for those who paid for a SE version they have to still give them updates and if they paid for a 3 Year License then my guess they will have updates for 3 years after they stopped selling the SE version. Don't know when they stopped selling SE but guess it was when 2007 came out.
I know they had the Ad-Aware SE Plus Edition in Mar 16, 2007 because they gave away at CastleCops 5 Year Contest. http://www.castlecops.com/t182794-Ca...t_Winners.html
So they have to give all these people and other who paid updates.
They have alway had as you know the updater but they also have always had the def files at there site.
I got the Ad-Aware SE Plus Edition but did not want to have all the added things running all the time so have not installed it. Where the free version only runs when I run it. And even then it only finds the very same MRU's that I am not worried about. | | Distinguished Member with 3,730 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Experience: Intermediate | | ad-aware i forgot i was on vacation for 2 weeks ,so i got the same update as you 12/27/07. | | Senior Member with 429 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Location: Earth Experience: Beginner |

#10 | OK. So, at hewee's link, that's the update for Ad-Aware SE. Am I correct, from reading all this, the updates for SE andPersonal (free) are all the same, and have always been the same? If so, it's been a long time since having to download and install them manually, can you please tell me how? I have Ad-Aware SE Personal ( free ) build 1.06r1 with SE1R210 27.12.2007 defs installed. Thank you for your time. | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun |

Thank you for your time. | You unzip the SE zip and you have a defs.ref file in it.
Then if you go to C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal or where ever you installed it your see the defs.ref file in the Ad-Aware SE Personal folder. You can copy and paste from the zip the def file or copy the one that is already there as a backup and then add the one from from the zip there.
Do all this with Ad-Aware SE closed down and when you open it you should see got the SE1R211 02.01.2008 update. | | Senior Member with 101 posts. | | Join Date: May 2005 Experience: Intermediate |

#12 | I do not find Ad-Aware 2007 very effective. Before then, I had Ad-Aware SE Personal (Pro edition), and never had any spyware problems for several months. After 'upgrading' to Ad-Aware 2007 (also Pro edition) (Lavasoft gave two extra month's on my subscription free) and I configured it to Lavasoft's online manual instructions, my other spyware scanner Zone Alarm Security Suite found two keyloggers on my PC within two month's of installation. So good-bye Lavasoft even with its real-time? protection.
I since did further research. No anti-spyware software is going to be 100% effective because each will catch different things, so it does not hurt to use multiple anti-spyware products (unlike firewall and anti-virus software). Here's what am using today - 1) Zone Alarm anti-spyware (great scanner, not real time protection), 2) PC tools Spyware doctor www.pctools.com with industry leading 625K definitions on paid version (around 190K on free version, more than Spybot) and real time protection, been using it for a month without issues 3) supplemented with Microsoft Windows Defender, its free, but only weekly updates and by itself PC reviews give it only an 75-80% effectiveness rating 4) Threatfire, www.threatfire.com (free or paid), zero-day threat software which uses real-time behavioral analysis, which is different than traditional definition based anti-malware software which it often takes hours or days for the vendors to develop the latest definitions to protect you. | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun |

#13 | Threatfire does sound really great and there are some other great programs out there free and or paid but will not work on 98.
WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com is really great and you have a free version but the paid version does more but even the free version is great. Compare WinPatrol FREE and WinPatrol PLUS
Also if you buy the WinPatrol PLUS you get free upgrades for life.
I love my copy of WinPatrol Plus that was given to me by BillP Studios. | | Senior Member with 429 posts. | | Join Date: May 2004 Location: Earth Experience: Beginner |

#14 | Thanks. I currently use AVG Pro, Spybot and the thread subject, Ad-Aware SE Personal edition. I'm behind a NAT router with XPSP2 firewall enabled. I do another thing I don't see proclaimed much, and that's face the internet only when on a Limited User Account (except for updates etc.). This makes it more difficult more malware to get to the system files while online. This has been pretty good to me, even with the kids jumping all over the place on the net. I've manually installed the latest Lavasoft defs, but still need to run a scan. I'm going to try and verify at Lavasoft these defs are compatible with SE Personal(free). | | Distinguished Member with 54,745 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2001 Location: *Random People Pleaser***Sacra Experience: Having fun |

#15 | Good your on a Limited User Account. Even for update etc I think you should be on a Limited User Account that has the added rights to update etc. Never use the ADMIN Account because it will make your PC wide open to anything. Don't have XP so can can say much more thing this.
But you should get another Firewall because XP firewall is the worse.
See firewall rating and leak test here. http://www.matousec.com/projects/win...ts-results.php
Good you got Ad-Aware SE def from here. http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/
Just make sure you get the SE defs and all should be ok.
They have always had one SE def file for all versions of SE.
I never find anything from Ad-Aware SE but some MRU and that is nothing to worry about. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
