I've been looking around trying to find out if I should get another firewall for my computer. I am currently running Windows Vista, and my only firewall is Windows Firewall. Is this enough to protect my computer? Thanks! | | Member with 78 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2007 Experience: Beginner | | I'm new at this but it's my understanding you only use one firewall and one virus protection but as many spyware as you want....???? | | Member with 78 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2007 Experience: Beginner | | If you have at&t they will give you free norton protection. search for at&t free norton protection and it will tell you what you need to delete to install it all step by step.... | | Member with 41 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Experience: Intermediate | | Well I'm not talking about anti-virus or spyware removal programs, I'm talking about just firewalls. And I don't use Norton, as I consider it the lowest form of antivirus programs.
I'm just wondering if I should download another firewall, or stick to just Windows Firewall. | | Junior Member with 7 posts. | | | | Two firewalls won't hurt. I traditionally have used the Windows Firewall as well as a purchased one with no ill effects. | | Distinguished Member with 3,035 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Avalon,Catalina Island,Ca. Comodo F/W gets good marks here and it has a free version.I think you would get general agreement here to have only one firewall enabled.
You did not describe your internet connection, but if broadband,a router(hardware firewall) provides great protection also.

So is it worth getting another firewall? | | Distinguished Member with 9,752 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Experience: Mac Addict | | If you have a good anti-virus and anti-spyware application you (arguably) don't need a firewall if you are behind a router. Just don't run more than one firewall at one time. | | Member with 41 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Experience: Intermediate | | ok, thanks a bunch. I'll stick to just Windows Firewall then! | | Distinguished Member with 9,752 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Experience: Mac Addict |

#11 | I'm not sure the Vista firewall is effective for stopping outbound traffic. If you happen to have installed malware on your PC that is collecting data and sending it home, will Vista stop it?
I believe Vista is good in that its User Admin Control process will ask you if you want to execute the malware if you were tricked by a rogue website into clicking on a link that tries to download and install it. Hopefully, you don't agree. However, there are probably other ways for sites to trick you into willingly install malware and that's why I think a firewall that looks at what goes out is needed. | | Member with 41 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Experience: Intermediate |

#14 | i tried COMODO personal and found it to be very user-intuitive, BUT i guess i have to play around with the settings a bit as i was unable to install my printer drivers because for one reason or another COMODO was blocking its installation...as i did not have time to fiddle with the settings i just uninstalled it and driver installation went without a hitch...since i am also using a router will stick to windows firewall for a while....if improperly setup, i find third party firewalls a bit limiting...;-) | | Member with 41 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2008 Experience: Intermediate |

#15 | Ok, I've decided that I'm going to stick with what I have. After all, I have a pretty good Linksys router combined with Windows Firewall. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
