Unhappy A little advice please?
Hello,

Can anyone help?

I bought a secondhand xp laptop for my daughter whos nine...my daughter has problems writing and is to use a laptop in the near future at school, this was bought to help her with the keyboard practice for word etc.

The laptop itself is working fine-my pc however has passed over to the other side ...ironiclly just as i was backing my pics up as it had been making a rather loud ticking noise: 1st question: Could i retrieve the photos from the said dead computer?

Secondly as this happened last nite...i needed access to the internet & had a bright idea.....install modem on to laptop! Only to discover during installation i needed a password to continue install I need adminastrative rights?

Can i override this as there is no way this password can be traced?

Thank you.

Hi,

You can try to retrieve any data needed from the failed computer by installing it's hard drive into any other XP computer as a second, or Slave, hard drive.

Any tech place around where you are should also be able to do this for you to see if the drive will run just long enough to get files off.

This does not work all the time, it's something to try.

A reasonably experienced semi-pro family member or friend near you might be able to help, depending on how much you value what files are on the drive-

For the Administrator access: No, I'm afraid we cannot help you with that. There are plenty of places you should be able to find help though using any Search tool.

Yours does sound like a common problem with used corporate laptops, however we have no way to determine what anyone says is valid. I have to Close this thread since someone no doubt will post something here, so if you want to continue to get help with the hard drive problem, I suggest you start a New Thread in our Hardware forum asking what you did about the clicking noise, etc. there.

Thanks for understanding!
