I'm nervous about this page ...
For some reason when I go to Google (for 2 days now) I get a Japanese version with a ton of question marks. When I enter a search item, the results page is full of question marks also. I can't get the normal Google back. Has some type of malware changed it??

I'm providing a screenshot.

Hello lets have a look and see whats happening

If you have HJT already please uninstall before reinstalling new version
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,
When you have the Google homepage open, at the top right look for: Preferences

In there what do you have set for Display Google tips and messages in:

and
Search for pages written in any language (Recommended).
Search only for pages written in these language(s):

I don't see any obvious malware in the logs.

This item however, is from Norton Antivirus- you already have CA Internet Security.... were you using Norton before and uninstalled it?

I'd like to see this list please:

  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Thanks, Byteman. My page no longer has 'Preferences' showing. It's all been replaced with question marks. (See Screenshot above) Actually, my computer has been acting strange ever since I noticed that Norton warned me it detected a new network!?! I posted about that a couple of weeks ago.
http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...-detected.html
I didn't think anymore about it because RoadRunner said they had made some network changes but couldn't explain it anything further.

My Norton was ready to expire so I uninstalled it (I thought) and installed the freebie (CA) that comes with RoadRunner.

Hi, Use the Norton Removal Tool described here please, it will look for and remove anything left from Norton apps.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

If you are not going to use Norton anytime again, you need not do anything about the Product Key, etc for it.

You have some other things to do, I will post back shortly.

Hi,

Java(TM) 6 Update 3 <<this has been updated to Update 4.

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1<<
these older versions of Java plugins very vulnerable to trojan Vundo, uninstall it, as you have the latest already installed.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 <<very outdated, it's at version 1.5 now, you should uninstall the old one after downloading this one, don't install it over the older version!

SpyBot-Search & Destroy Tools

***Note: I would NOT advise you letting it install the Tea Timer as it will conflict and cause you trouble.
There is a checkbox you will see during the install, UNcheck theTea Timer one.

Install, Update, and then be sure to IMMUNIZE in SpyBot after installing it.

You should be able to make out on the lower right, under the two buttons that ususally say

Search and on the right side, says I'm Feeling Lucky

A little farther down, click "Google.com in English"

When you go to google, how do you do so?

Do you type www.google.com into the address bar, or merely google.

Note, in your screenshot, you are not at www.google.com . You are at www.google.co.jp

What happens if you use IE?

Clear your cache.

Atribune's ATF cleaner does a nice job.

Correct- either way, by using the link or re-tying the right address, will get her back to the English display.

Hi Byteman and Rainforest! I've done absolutely everything each of you has suggested and nothing has changed. The Google page appears the same in IE and in FF. Typing the correct URL takes me straight to the Japanese page anyway. Clicking on "Google.com in English" doesn't help.

Byteman, I've followed all of your instructions regarding Java and SpyBot.

Rainforest, I've emptied my cache. I'm concerned and also curious as to why it's only Google that shows up that way. All of the other pages that I browse to appear perfectly normal.

I can't shake the feeling that there is something very wrong.

If you can think of something else to check, I will do it.

B:
According to this site, http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp , the latest Java is 6 .3

The like you posted in #9, took me to a page that mentions "JDK 6 Update 4
The Java SE Development Kit (JDK) includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and command-line development tools that are useful for developing applets and applications."

I am confused. Easily so these days.

P1016:
How did you clear your cache?

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Locate "HOSTS"
Zip / Compress it.
Attach it, at your next reply.
You will need to use the "Go Advanced" button to attach a file.
