Talking How does this setup sound
Ok guys here's what I have on my computer..as we speak

Before I start, I should mention that I have an oldy, moldy 2001 Dell computer with windows xp, oh, and 384 MB of Ram...if that helps

I have spyware blaster, winpatrol, spyware terminator and norton's av. I'm thinking of losing Norton's as you have informed me that NOD32 would be a much better choice with XP. I'm also thinking that there is some kind of protection that came with the XP?

I have just installed terminator a few minutes ago, and I have a page in front of me asking questions How would you like to use the program?

1. Scan for spyware

2. Protect against spyware

3. Protect against spyware and viruses

So. How do these programs on my computer sound to you?? Not enough?? Too much??

Inform me. Thanx a bunch. You guys are absolutely wonderful with all of my tedious questions. YOu would think that after having this computer for so long I would have absorbed SOME knowledge.

APPARENTLY NOT!!! :eek

sounds good enough to me, though id reccommend AVG's free antivirus and kaspersky or zone alarm firewalls.
if you choose to remove norton you have to remove it using the tool downloaded from here

i'd also consider upgrading the ram to at least 512 MB.

I did have the avg on my computer for quite a while before I got norton. I was always plagued by trojans, and about a month ago, it missed something HUGE as my whole hard drive was completely fried. Had to get a new one, and at that point installed the extra RAM...to 384 MB. I know I should have more, but, that's what I got for the time being.

Does the XP come with some kind of firewall already installed?? I'm assuming, no, which is why you suggested the zone alarm.

Thanx

1. Yes 2. Yes 3. No, since you have Norton I wouldn't install the Clam Anti-virus component of Spyware Terminator.

Spyware Terminator and WinPatrol both provide real-time protection so I would turn off the real-time protection in Spyware Terminator that is covered by WinPatrol. If you're not sure which program does what, turn off all the real-time protection in Spyware Terminator and let WinPatrol do the task.

Windows XP SP2 has a built in firewall that's adequate but you'd have better protection with ZoneAlarm or Comodo.

yeah, windows does come with its own firewall, but to be honest its a bit crap. go for zone alarm or kaspersky.

oh aaarrgghh

APPARENTLY you're only allowed to make 1 choice out of the 3. So. I guess it's a choice between 1 and 2.

When ya click 1 it says...check your computer for spyware threats on demand.

#2 says....install real time shield for continuous system protection against spyware intrusions.

With #2 there's that issue with "real time" again

If it's not one thing, it's.......

Yes, I totally agree. The Windows XP firewall only monitors incoming traffic, as opposed to Vista which monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic. I have used ZA in the past and COMODO F/W Pro, but I find Kaspersky to be a lot more user friendly. It also monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic. ZA, in my experience, used to be brilliant. The latest version, however, has been known to create conflicts with some other software.

okey dokey. went with door #1

I checked out ZA on download .com, and that seems to be the concensus by quite a few ppl...zone alarm isn't what it used to be.

Isn't that how it always works with stuff!! When a company new and improves their product, it becomes NOT new and improved BUT new and crappy.

I'm going to slide on over to kaspersky and give them a peek. As if I'll understand anything

In between loads of laundry I'm going to see where I can turn off the real time on my spyware terminator. Shouldn't be that hard to find, i would expect.

Hey, it's not. Just clicked on the icon on my desktop, terminator program pops up asking me what I want to do today....fast scan or full scan....I think I'll pick full today....and what do ya know. Right at the top is a tab that says "real time protection" Clicked on that, and hey what do ya know, the box that says "use real time protection" is unchecked. Which means. It's turned off. Whoo hoo.

Thanx

Honey
