I've been hacked, or something?
Hi everyone,

I have a copy of windows xp home, or is it called basic? running on a pc which has cable isp, via a wireless router (dlink) an additional one in another room i use infrequently, with win2k. The firewall is set to 128bit encryption with like a 30 character password, at the moment, although previously it was not encrypted; the connection to the isp runs through the router 1st.

Also, the regular "user" account on this pc was, "administrator" but now, is a 'limited' account.

I am fairly certain that someone has hacked into this pc (or somehow they have "access to my pc, can change settings, and can follow my surfing trail" , but not my home network-or the other pc. I even came home and found my entrance unlocked, a couple times. nothing was missing but this all has me thinking overtime.

I stay on top of spyware malware and the like, antivirus etc. but with all the gotomyhomepc and the like on the market i really dont know what to look for. I've changed privacy settings only to come back the next day and find them back to "sharing". - this is what led me to believe i've been, well, hacked. who, why, i dont know.

but i dont like it. Unfortunately a reformat is not an option, i have FAR TOO much installed, and i am guilty of not having a clean backup so i cant do it now anyway.

Any ideas on what to look for files wise? Perhaps "they" are reading this right now. I do realize this is a significant legal issue possibly, but to be honest, i would like to just know how to stop this.

Also a bummer, my security camera at the door which only I know about, the images are all messed up. granted i could go to a pro, but that would cost a fortune. However if i can find proof/hard evidence on my pc that it has been tampered, and can follow that up with whatever service they may have used, then i would maybe i would reach for the money i dont have and persue possible prosecution.

Any idea? I greatly appreciate any one with some knowledgeable guidance in this matter, and thank you for your time.

Hi, We can look at a Hijackthis log to see if anything out of the ordinary is going on first:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Click "Download the Hijackthis Installer" link in blue.
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Please also do this:
  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Hi,

Please download and run this tool exactly as it says...Note: it runs only in Safe Mode.

Please read all through the info so you know what will be done.

There is a Printable Version button up under the Thread Tools drop down menu that will let you print a nice text version of these instructions.
Alternate way to save directions:Open Notepad> Copy and Paste any text you wish into Notepad, and Save the file as something you will recognize like TSGhelp.txt and save it onto your desktop.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop (means the location download goes TO= the Desktop)

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi, When you booted to Safe Mode, did you click on the Administrator account?

You need to log onto your usual account, if that is at admin level, not a Limited account....if not, we will have to accept it as is...

I did expect SDFix to find this item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [runner1] C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe 61A847B5BBF728173599284503996897C881250221C8670836AC4FA7C8833201749139

And, I don't see it now in your new Hijackthis log...which makes me think, you are using another user account now, as well....are you?

We must continue using the same User account you created the original Hijackthis log in, please (and if you are, forgive me, but I need to determine what happened to that entry....)

1. Did you lose the SDFix log or something, and run it 2 times and post the 2nd log?

2. If so, could you look for the first log and post it please?

3, If you are in another user account now, please switch back to the same one you ran Hijackthis in when you posted the 1st log and post a brand new Hijackthis log

Hi, I'm sorry, you told about the Limited account already....my fault!!

Anyway- we have a second shot at it this way:

You will have to restart to Safe Mode and this time, log onto the Administrator account

Go into the Contol Panel> User Accounts> Change User Account settings and make the Limited one an Admin level, just for now...remember, we have to change it back, in case I forget to tell you! (I'm gettting a cold or something)

Then boot to Safe Mode and log onto the User account, that is now at Administrator level...and re-do SDFix...again, I'm sorry I forgot that slight glitch!

....
sorry, didnt realize that would be of issue, being that its all on the same machine, but yes i logged off the limited and on to the administrator in safe mode ( oddly enough, listen to this, there were 2 account choices to log into in safe mode, MY adminstrator account, or THE adminstrator account, but NOT the limited account which is what is ALWAYS used, and for that matter, there is no THE administrator account, so that must be some kind of default thing MS created exclusively for safe-mode.

I'm rambling.... so anyway, I'll do that. log off, back into the poweruser account and change access to the limited so that it is admin, then reboot into safemode, choos that account, and run the sd then hijck again, and post.

interestingly enough, even while i was working on this, changes were made in the control panel to enable access to this pc from outside this (my) network.

Appreciate you spending so much time on this, I'll look for the reply, tonight, tomorrow or the weekend....as i see you are in the tri-state so I am not the only one thinking about how close tomorrow a.m. is

Hi

Try to use the same account that you made the Hijackthis log in.

You said: THere were two Administrator accounts, one yours and one THE Admin? Use yours, to change the LImited one or the power user one also to admin level, just for the scans....

(I'm not sure you could install HJThis in Limited?)

Perhaps in power user.... tell you what, I'd do both to Admin level, one at a time... and scan ALL accounts in Safe Mode, with SDFix.

1. THE Administrator account only shows in Safe Mode, others should also....but, you may have to use the down arrow to see them! You know, scroll down, only with the down key/up key.

2. Any account you do want to scan, has to be set to administrator level--- when you go to log on, it says "Administrator" next to the user's account name.... If it isn't, you'd need to use THE Administrator account to make at least ONE admin level.....it gets confusing.

Please try again, it does not have to be tonight, I'm posting this all so you have it for whenever you can do it.

Hi, Doesn't look like it's in that account either!

But, there is some ad/spyware there, so let's do this:

Stay in that account as an administrator user

Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
alternate site
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe to install and use the default settings for installation.
Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
    · Click the Scanning Control tab.
    · Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    o Close browsers before scanning
    o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
  • Run SUPERAntiSpyware and update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Udates".
  • When done, select "Scan for Harmful Software".
  • There are three scanning options available. Choose "Perform Complete Scan" and click "Next".
  • When done, a Scan Summary will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Place a checkmark next to items you wish to remove/quarantine and Click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked to Reboot, please do.
  • After Reboot, double-click on SuperAnti-Spyware icon on your Desktop.
  • Click Preferences, Click the Statistics/Logs Tab.
  • Under Scanner logs, Double-click SuperAnti-Spyware Scan Log.
  • It will open in your default test editor (such as Notepad or WordPad).
  • Please Highlight everything in the Notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
  • In your next reply, please post those results and include a fresh Hijackthis log.
  • Select close to exit the program.
Note: If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.

That should produce some results, post the log it makes and a new Hijackthis log from that same account, made of course, after running SUPerAntispyware.
