Exclamation Windows Security Threat
Let me start by saying that i know a little about computers, but by no means am I an expert. I hope I explain this so you can understand it.
My son has a

Medion PC
Model PC MTS
Type MED MT144
Windows XP Home Edition SP 2
Pentium (R) CPU 2.53GHz
2.52GHz
512mb of RAM

He turned on his pc & opened Internet Explorer & started to get loads of icons appear on his desktop.>>>>>>
(Error Cleaner/Privacy Protector/Spyware & Malware Protection/XP Antivirus 2008) I have placed them all in the recycle bin for the moment.

XP Antivirus started on its own. A message appeared >>>>
XP Antivirus 2008 Threats Detected
WARNING 107 Infections Found
Unwanted software(Malware) or tracking cookies have been found during last scan.It is highly recommended to remove it from your computer.
Then giving the option to either >>>>>>>Remove All Threats Now or Continue Unprotected.
I chose to click on X & close it down

Also a Windows Security Alert came on screen saying >>>>>>>
Windows has detected an internet attack attempt. Somebody is trying to infect your pc with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your pc from internet attacks, hijacking attempts & spyware. Click here to download spyware remover for total protection.
I chose to click on X to close it down.

I disconnected the internet from his pc.

Internet Explorer opened on its own, but could not connect because of cable dis-connected. The URL was >>>>
http://www.safenavweb.com/index.php?...d=2&pn=5&pid=0

Also on the task bar an icon appeared for XP Antivirus 2008. I tried to right click on it so I could remove it, but could not.

A Spyware Alert also appeared >>>>>>>
Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine. This virus is distributed via the internet through e mail & Active-X objects. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers e mails from your local computer & re-distributes them itself. In worse cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer stealing passwords & personal data. This process should be removed from your system
Type Virus
Systems Affected Windows 2000,NT,ME.XP,Vista
Security Risk (0-5) 5
Recommendations. Click yes to remove it from your computer.
Yes & No were given as the options, but did not chose either, I tried to close it down via the X but could not. The Alert is still sitting on the desktop

I am running a Anti Virus check at the moment using AVG Free Edition, so far it has detected >>>>>JS/Downloader Agent

I am going to run Lavasoft Ad Aware SE Personal as soon as the virus checker has finished

Are some or none/all of these messages genuine? What do I do now, can I just turn off pc after these checks are done? Sorry I do not have a clue as to what to do now.
Maybe I have gone over the top in explaining the problems, but at least that way you are aware of all that is happening so far.
?CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?
Please try not to get to technical in any replies as i'm a idiot. lol

Thanx in advance

Hi there...
Sounds like a nasty infection.

Go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer.
Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website
Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

A couple of things before I do that.
I am sending this via my pc as my sons in dis-connected from the internet at the moment.
Will it be safe to re-connect his pc to the internet so I can do this?(This e mail was received at my pc not his) If so do I copy & paste the link & send via e mail from me too him.

Coupla' things on your initial post, and also I have to say you are in good hands with Cheeseball81, and your infection will ultimately be removed (it may be tedious and may take pages of logs but hang in there and follow Cheeseball81's instructions).

Now for my two cents.

All those warnings you're getting are marketing ploys and they are likely false positives to get you (SCARE you) to purchase the removal software they sell.

With the exception of what Cheeseball81 tells you to click on, DO NOT click on any of the "recommended" links that you referred to. I don't think you have, so that's good.

I doubt if ANY of the messages you are getting are "genuine", and these scammers can make these things look as though they come from legitimate sources. The "Windows Security Alert" thing is a very popular trick to get you to do a scan, which will only show more infections (likely all false positives) and scare you into buying the dubious removal software.

I've had several neighbors get these kinds of warnings, and turns out it's really only one infection that's causing them. As I keep saying, Cheeseball81 will take care of that.

FWIW, one neighbor had a Zlob infection that he got by downloading a false ActiveX Video Codec to view an on line video. That Zlob infection in turn gave him all those warnings and "recommendations" to do scans with PURCHASED software. Don't buy it!!!

Do any of these look familiar??? They are all examples of these "fake" security scams:

(I purposely blacked out the IP addresses here. Even though they were bogus, and this warning itself is bogus, I don't think it's kosher to be posting IP addresses here. Probably a little overkill on my part)

As you can see, they look "official" . . . but I'll reiterate from my previous post: DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THOSE "RECOMMENDATIONS" OR DOWNLOAD LINKS.

(BTW, I got these screenshots from ONLY ONE neighbor's computer. He got some 27!! warning pop-ups in a period of about a week, all different, but I've only shown 6 of them here. The guy's machine looked like it was infected with EVERYTHING possible, and turns out this was only caused by one single virus).

Thanks BobJam

chrisg49, I assure you all those warnings are ploys due to the infection

Please print these instructions for reference, as you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from Here or Here.

Note: You will need to run this tool while having an Internet Connection. The tool will download other files while running.
  1. Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  2. The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  3. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional files from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
  4. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  5. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).
Please post the C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Then do this

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi Cheeseball1181

I have done what you requested, but have hit a snag. I downloaded ComboFix to my desktop, I tried to open it and got the following message.

What do I do know please?
I have pasted the log files you requested below.

Download the Trial version of Superantispyware Pro (SAS):
http://www.superantispyware.com/supe....html?rid=3132

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new Hijack This log.

My sister has the EXACT same problem, to the dot. She's almost positive she received the virus from an ActiveX video on Myspace (typical). It's a real problem: she can't even pull up Windows Task Manager. It's also really pushing her PC. She told me over the phone (she lives a few states away) that the fan is always running. I'll help you guys any way I can. As long as you help me and my sister. We're stumped.

Hey svorax,

Not saying this nastily or abrasively, but it would probably be better if you started your own thread on your sister's problem.

There's two reasons for this:
1. You won't know if any posters making responses on this thread are addressing your issue or chrisg49's, UNLESS they say who they're specifically responding to (which will confuse you both if they don't). While you're issues are similar, there may be different solutions (which will further confuse you and chrisg49).

2. You won't have to root through this thread for any responses specifically to you, because if you start your own, you will be the "default respondee" (and someone will likely make the same comments I have here if another poster puts their issue in your thread).
Again, please don't take this as an abrasive comment . . . just a friendly tip.

You don't have to worry. Abrasiveness not taken (the only time in my life I will ever say that). I'll start my own thread.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log
