Need help! Unable to complete security scans.
System specs: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53 GHz 1.93 GB of RAM
Windows XP professionnal SP2 operating system

This week i was performing a routine scan with AVG free edition and an infection was detected; JS\Downloader.Agent. The scan then "got stuck" on a file and just kept going for 11 hours! When i tried to stop the scan, it didn't respond. When i tried to quit the application, it told me that it couldn't quit because a scan was in progress. So i forced the application to quit through Task manager. I tried scanning again a few times and got the same result.

I then tried to remove AVG to reinstall it and the uninstallation process froze in the middle. So i went and manually deleted the Grisoft folder in the Program files folder. I also ran a search for all files with AVG in the file name (including hidden and system files) and deleted everything. When i went back to the uninstallation page in Windows and found AVG, there was no file size indicated and clicking the remove tab gave me a message that said AVG had already been uninstalled.

So i reinstalled AVG and still no luck. I took the path name to the infected file from a "frozen scan" and found it on my computer. I opened it and AVG prompted me to take action. I moved it to the vault and then deleted the file. I then ran another scan to double check and this time it didn't detect it, but the scan froze again, and kept going for 9 hours... So uninstalled AVG again (going through the same manual process as before) and installed AVAST free edition. I ran a scan, and the same thing happened again! The scan froze on an unknown file and just kept going until i forced the application to quit. Same result with Ad-Aware 2007 scan. What is going on? I don't know what to do anymore. I can't complete a scan. Everything else on my computer works fine. Please help!

Thanks

Hi SjBuckley,

Try executing your AV in Safe Mode rather than uninstalling, reinstalling. You probably have too many things loaded and probably executing at once (just a guess on my part - i.e. not sure).

In Safe Mode, few programs are running, and AVG can complete its work more than likely.
