Welcome to the TSG forum.
You didn't say if your version of Norton has a firewall ?

I might suggest that you remove Norton, Then install AVG free ... http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

Then, if you want a different firewall, install Zone Alarm Free ... http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
This'll get you started in breaking the expensive Norton bad habit.

The next step might be trimming up your startups in msconfig ..
Then install WinPatrol Free, to help control your startups .. http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

Do you have an external HD to backup your computer in ???

I went to Symantec's website to download a Norton Removal tool vs using the uninstall process. It removed almost all of the Norton references. I still get a message about a missing Norton file when I use Vista's Media Center. Not an issue.

It may not save you much on start-up. What version of Windows? My Vista PC, which is fast, still takes over 2 minutes, and dropping Norton saved about 10 seconds. My XP PC is under a minute.

Try opening the command box and type msconfig and click the start-up tab. There you can see what's loaded in start-up. Some of those processes don't have to load on boot.

May I ask a question here too? I'm going to probably get rid of Norton in May when the subscription expires. I know there is a place in the forum that will take me step by step how to delete Norton, how to install AVG, etc., right? Oh, by the way. I'm getting the HD back up tomorrow. I returned some curtains.

Barbara, these folks are WONDERFUL here !!!

I am new here too and am looking for information on getting rid of Norton and installing something else that won't slow down my system. I use several different computers (all with XP) and they vary in boot up time from 5 to 10 minutes! I could use some guidance on how to get rid of Norton and what is the best AV to replace it with. Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to the TSG forum.

Remove Norton in Ad/Remove .. Then install AVG free .. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

Which version of Norton do you have ?? ... may have to run a removal tool on it.

Thanks! I have the 2008 version...I just stupidly keep updating the subscription, but this is getting ridiculous. I had out local internet tech support get into my computer over Christmas (router problem) and they mentioned that it ran really slowly and Norton was the cause.

@OboeBop

here's the link to the norton removal tool http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...9?OpenDocument
it'll remove any traces left behind from the 2008 version or older versions you may have on your pc,

since you said you keep renewing the subscription I assume you've had older versions on your pc aswell

Hi-
My Norton 360 keeps turning itself off and then screwing up my IE connection. Do I need to remove Norton before downloading AVG Free? I had it uninstalled earlier today and should have started from there but decided to give it one more chance (wrong move!)
Thanks for letting me jump in here on this thread....
