Runing Certain Programs at start up?
I have recently gotten AVAST for my home computer and it seems to work very well i also have gotten spybot search and destroy. Well i have a very old computer with only 256 ram so as you can imagine my system resources are limited. My question is is it necesary to run Spyware search and destroy on start up? Or can i only turn it on when im going to scan? Seeing as AVAST stays on all the time and i have a crap for a computer .

Ok well this is defintely an opt. Im not sure where it is in XP, but either one has a Startup programs opt. Either way take a second to sift through your control panel and its called startup programs, change starup programs, ect

Since Avast is an anti-virus it has to run at startup.

If you just did the regular install of Spybot, it won't run at startup. The only way it would run at startup is if you turned on Resident TeaTimer, which is the real-time protection part of Spybot, but Spybot will still work fine as a scanner without TeaTimer turned on.

Most freeware anti-spyware programs are just scanners, so they don't run at startup.

Other good ones are:

SpywareBlaster
AdAware
SuperAntiSpyware
AVG Anti-Spyware

Hey L0g1c,

Sounds like you have the "Run check on program start" box checked in S&D settings. I think that is the default anyway.

If you don't want S&D to run at start up, you can go into settings and uncheck that selection.

To do that, you need to be in S&D "Advanced" mode if you're not already.

To get into advanced mode, start S&D and then go to the "Mode" menu. Click on it and select "Advanced Mode".

Once you're in Advanced Mode, click on the "Settings" button on the left lower side. Then click on "Settings" again (on the left).

A window will come up with all the settings selections. Scroll down a little to "Automation>Program start", and the first box under it will be "Run check on program start". Uncheck that if it's checked.
