advice 4 new laptop and wirless connection
We are getting a lap top as a second computer and will be using a wirless router to get connected to the net. Other than a decent antivirus what will I need to consider for security with this wirless connection. I'm a babe in the woods on this one. Never had wirless but have heard some real nasty stories about people driving by and hacking into your system. Can't afford the expensive stuff so looking for some free stuff that will accomplish a decent security level for our upcoming wirless connection...Thanks in advance...Bill

Turn on WPA on your wireless router and use a long and complex passphrase. After you have finished setting up the network, disable the SSID broadcast on the router.

Disabling SSID broadcast is pointless because they can still be seen with programs like NetStumbler. I agree completely with WPA encryption but will encourage WPA2 if it is an option.

Is NetStumbler that popular? I suppose it is popular for laptop users. But I go with more layers of protections when possible.

Also I have seen advice that one should change the passphrase once every 2 months or so, as passwords can be cracked.

Is it popular? Look into wireless hacking and it will be mentioned. Not broadcasting your SSID doesn't add any extra layer of security at all. It's more worthless than MAC filtering is.

In regards to the password, just choose a long enough one with random numbers and letters (no dictionary words) and WPA2 and you should be fine. I've never heard of WPA2 being cracked with a good enough passphrase.
