Solved: AVG e-mail scanner spontaneously shutting down
I'm trying to clean up a machine for a relative. When the machine boots up, the AVG free antivirus program comes up fully functional as far as I can tell. But withing a minute or so the tray icon goes gray and when I look to see why, I find that the e-mail scanner shows as disabled, and the program will not re-enable it. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

I posted a more complete description of the problem in the Maleware forum, but haven't gotten any response.

Hi it may be that Avg has become corrupted.
Either reinstall or find the program file exe and try and reinstall from there.
Has Avg recently been updated?
If no try running an update.

I believe that AVG is performing the daily threat file updates normally, which occasionally include updates to the program itself. But I agree that it is worth trying a reinstall.

The machine had a lot of junk on it, and I don't really believe that I have found all of it yet. Another trouble sign was that when I did a clean install of the latest version of Ad-Aware, it wouldn't run. Leads me to suspect that something is attempting to shut down all of the secuurity apps on the system.

avg
If AVG Control Center displays an error message “E-mail scanner is not fully functional”, please left-click the E-mail Scanner window (the red one), in the bottom part of the AVG Control Center window you will see a detailed description of why the E-mail scanner does not work properly.

Been there, done that. That is the first thing I looked at when I noticed that the tray icon was going gray shortly after each reboot. When I look at the details, it says that the e-mail scanner has been disabled, and offers a button for re-enabling it. But the button has no effect. If the machine is rebooted, the tray icon shows in color, which is an indication that everything is up to date and working, but within a minute or so, it reverts to gray again, and the e-mail scanner shows as disabled again.

Hi copy and paste your Hjt log in the same post you made in the Malware and Hjt log forum.
Log experts are always buy so it may take some time.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click Edit > Select All> Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.

You have Symantec [Norton] and Avg installed which will cause you problems.

The machine in question is not my own, and I won't get to make another "housecall" until tomorrow. I believe that it originally had Norton installed, but I uninstalled it sometime ago (at least I think I did), so although there may be some residual crap left around in the registry, I'm pretty sure there really is only one virus scanner installed.

Below is a copy of the HJT log that you asked for.

Sorry about that. I misunderstood your previous post. Thought you were specifically asking me to post it here so you could have a look at it.

Solved
I did the AVG reinstall that was suggested, and I haven't seen the problem since. I did discover that AVG ran fine until I started Firefox (ver 1.5, since upgraded to ver 2). I had the AVG control center running, and the e-mail function went red as soon as I started the browser. Anybody's guess what the heck was going on.
