A MSN >essenger Virus ?
Chaps

My pc has got all the anti virus and anti spyware programmes recommended here installed and everything seems to be fine.

However when I use msn messenger, the person I am talking to keeps getting a message that I have sent them a zip file and would they like to open it.

I have uninstalled and then re installed the msn but the problem still persists.

Any idea what it could be and how to knock it out.

Regards

Mick

Go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer.
Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website
Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

You are definitely infected

Please go here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
Follow the instructions to run Combofix
Then post the results here

Hi

I installed the combfix and ran a log as instructed and then took a copy of the log ready to paste it here.

The pc became temporarily disconnected from the internet so I had to go through the re boot process. This means that I do not now have a copy of the log.

Is there a way I can retrieve the log without going through another scan and risk disconnection from the internet again.

Regards

Mick

Hi

Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been away for a couple of days.

Where do I look for this file, I am next to useless at this sort of thing.

Hi

Thank you for your patience, it is much appreciated.

I have located the combofix file in the C drive and when I clicked onto it, over 100 small sub files came up.

Now what do I do.

Regards

Mick

I would prefer you run it again
But if you choose not to, please do this instead

Download the Trial version of Superantispyware Pro (SAS):
http://www.superantispyware.com/supe....html?rid=3132

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new Hijack This log.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Quote:
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\egjsbgqgw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bwanoadj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qmscdztzzh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpwfqe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gixtitjqqoez.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a checkmark beside these entries and click fix checked.

That looks better

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

How are things now?

Hi

I have installed the newer Java and kicked out two older versions and everything now seems fine, so once again, thank you for your help.

The one thing that surprises me is that my anti virus is run by my ISP and updated every 30 minutes and I use Superantis and Spybot for the adaware stuff and yet none of these kicked the bugs out.

Is my security up to date ?

Regards

Mick
