I am running W98SE and aol 9.0 optimized. until recently whenever I sign on the first time in the day AVG Free would come up wit an udate sceen, retrieve the update and install it. About a week ago it quit doing this. When I try to initiate an update manually it would sometimes tell me that the update was unsuccessful, other times it would tell me that the update was not completed and to restart the computer. Then when I restart it and try to retrieve an update I am told that my computer is up to date and I have the latest updates.
Do I have a problem or is this behavior normal?

Hi open Avg it will list when the last update occured ..also in Avg you can reset it to update the moment your go online.
If the problem continues you may have to reinstall Avg.
