Stable anti virus s/w
I'm looking for recommendations for stable anti virus s/w. I gave up on Kaspersky due to BSOD's they were unable to fix. Their TS finally just quit responding to me. Switched to Trend Micro 2007 but was plagued with PcScnSrv.exe hogging the cpu the first 15-20 min of bootup. Pursuing their Spybot fix did not work. Loaded TM Internet Security 2008 over 2007 and the PcScnSrv problem was gone, but found a TM process (forget name) repeatedly erroring-off 30 min or so after every reboot. No BSOD's though. Did a thorough uninstall including editing the registry and deleting any remaining files on C, and ran for a few days with a 100% stable machine. Again downloaded TM Internet Security 2008 "free trial" entering my 2007 lic key and now get a BSOD about 50% of the way into a C drive scan. Every scan crashes. Also get intermittent BSOD's if TM is even open, but not scanning. I am using Folder Guard, but it's not "guarding" any folders on C. TM does have a warning about using another such program with 2007.

Is there any state-of-the-art and stable anti virus s/w out there? I ran McAfee Enterprise 8.0 for 2-3 yrs with zero problems, but this is 5-6 year old s/w and Kaspersky and TM catch stuff McAfee 8.0 misses.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Looks like NOD32 is promising. Gets good reviews and is Leo Laporte's fav. Any comments pro or con?

I was going to suggest NOD but then got distracted! I've used it for three years now and never had any problems. In the past there have been some complaints about update delays, probably due to server overload, but that seems to be sorted now.

I was also wondering if you were sure that Folder Guard couldn't be interfering in any way? I don't know anything about that program, but I see from the website that antivirus and similar programs need to be designated as trusted programs so that their activities don't trigger a Folder Guard response.

TOGG, thanks for the reply. Will keep NOD32 as "plan B". Trend Micro TS just got in touch with me via email for some sys config info. Also, system oddly now seems more stable. Need to do some scans to see if I can still brake it. Last BSOD was just after TMIS did an auto update and produced an error (yellow display) saying the update did not go well and it will revert back to previous one. Then BSOD. No, not positive Folder Guard is not at fault. I'll try to make it a "trusted program" or un install it.

I may not have made myself clear in my last post. As I read the info on the FG website, it is the antivirus that has to be designated as a 'Trusted Program' using the option in Folder Guard itself.
