Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB942615)

The above update keeps failing when I try to install it. Have waited a few days in between in case it was corrupt and had to be fixed. Still no joy. Is it just my laptop or is anyone else having this issue?

Any ideas on reasons why this update won't install? All others do.

Do you have Automatic Updates enabled?. If so, I suppose it's possible that you already have that patch (it shows up in Add/Remove on my computer as being installed on 11/12/2007 - not sure if that's the English date, 11th December, or 12th November, US style). I don't allow Auto Updates so I would have installed it myself using the 'Custom' option.

If KB942615 is already in your Add/Remove you could ignore whatever is telling you that you still need it, or, as an alternative, think about uninstalling it and then running Windows Update again, in case that fixes your problem.

There was an update that came out at about the same time which stopped IE6 from working properly and that was fixed by a later patch. As far as I know, it didn't affect IE7 and that seems to be confirmed in the revised version of the relevant KB Article;http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=942615

Cheers mate. I would have thought though that if it had already been installed that the MS Update site would not have picked it up again as a high priority update?

I do have auto update on but this has never happened before with any other high priority update?

I agree that, in principle, you should not be offered the patch if you already have it installed. However, MS Update is not foolproof and errors do happen.

Is the patch in your Add/Remove list?. If it is, you have to decide whether to believe Add/Remove or the update prompt. You could also run the Secunia Software Inspector which should pinpoint if any important patches are missing; http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ (This requires an up to date version of Sun Java to be installed on your computer. If you're not sure if you have it, or which version, you can use the java tester here; http://www.javatester.org/).

If the SSI confirms that the patch is missing you could try going to Windows Update to use the 'Custom' option to collect the patch that way. I've never used Automatic Updates so I don't know if you might have to disable it in order to use the Custom option.

When I used '98, I frequently got updates from the Catalog site. These came as .exe files which could be d/l and doubleclicked on to install. This worked as long as you knew exactly which patch you needed. I don't know if it works for XP but will do some research.

Good shout mate. I see this particular update is indeed installed under add/remove programs. Must be some glitch with the update system. Also, having just done a custom search for updates, it is still appearing as a high priority update.
