Antivirus not working
My best guess is something (like a service) is turned off.Iam running Vista, with all the upgrades to date. I have uninstalled and reinstlled AVG-among others but I have chosen to keep this one as the others will not turn on either.
I went to the Microsoft sight and had the scan done there and it found tings but said they could not be removed. Apparantly Microsoft usues your existing antivirus to remove the items. I go to my services.msc and find AVG active and in automatic state. I go to my windows security center and find that I have several red flags. First one says "windows did not find any antivirus software on this computer". This I know to be false as I can go to the folder and find the file. Also my AVG square is on in the toolbar.
The second flag states" windows defender and avg report they are both turned off. I go to the turn on button and nothing happens.
I know this has to be an easy fix, like activate something in the services.msc or change a registry value.
Does it matter that I have RegCure installed? Could that have taken something out?
I will appreciate any comments or suggestions and will tell you if I have done it already or if works will let you know.
Thanks
Jerry

When did this start to happen?
Right now how many AV programs are currently running?
Im not sure about RegCure, but you never know.

I am running only AVG at present. Windows defender runs by itself, but I have never seen it actually do anything in Vista, so I let it be. I have, after the problem started, tried others but uninstalled them. I used that live scan or whatever it is Microsoft has, but without an active antivirus it was useless-it spotted things but could not remove them on its own. I bought this laptop the day that Vista came out and, like a stubborn pet I have grown accustomed, even fond of it. But I bought it to test out Vista and have put this thing through the ringer (wringer?). I have reinstalled it about 7 times, not particularly interested in doing it again if I do not have to.

Hi have you use RegCure and let it make changes?
Undo any changes it may have made using their Undo section.
Registry cleaners can and often do have an adverse affect on the running of your system.

I tried that. I also uninstalled it after that and tried setting my machine back before I got it, but the problem is still there and that roll back caused a myriad of other things too. looks like I will make it thru the week and probaby reinstall it ...again, this weekend
