Stange happenings. Advice needed.
Heya guys.

My girlfriend is having a problem with her comp, and has asked me to help. I have to confess to being stumped.

She has what sounds like a radio station playing constantly on her desktop. There are no programs running. No weird processes that I can find. It isn't interfering with anything else, but she is concerned nevertheless.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are any other users logged onto the computer at the time?

I suppose it would be useful to know if it is really a live feed or simply a local file playing.
Disconnecting the unit from the internet would tell you that quite quickly. The program playing a live feed might show an error message. Ive heard of a spyware or malware program paying music but usually its a midi file....

Also then have you checked which programs are set to start when the machine start or as a user logs in?

Spyware S&D is a very reputable anti spyware tool, (dont take my word for it just google it) which allows startup programs to be toggled turned off and on> Really very handy.

After installing try:
Tools -> Select "Advanced Mode" -> Tools Task bar on the left -> System Startup
There will no doubt be all sort of useless stuff in there like acrobat and quicktime set to run on system startup. Possibly you may see something more obvious like a .pls, .asx or .mid file.

Let us know if any of these suggestions help.

Right, it sounded like a mock radio station, playing songs, adverts, and suchlike. No product names, song names or radio name was ever given though.

It played for about 35-40 mins after my post, then suddenly stopped. And it hasn't done it again yet. I was monitoring the processes when it stopped and there was no indication of something stopping.

I'll follow the advice given, and if it happens again i'll unplug the modem.

Cheers guys.

I don't know. I don't like it. If it were my PC, it would get wiped and reloaded.
