Solved: Spybot S&D Udate
Kinda a tossup whether this question belongs on this forum or All Other Software. Figured since it was about Spybot S&D, there would be more knowledge here.

I just finished the long and laborious process of updating the the latest version of Spybot (v1.5.2) on Dial-up Took over an hour and a half just downloading. Later, I had opened my Add/Remove Programs and noticed there are 2 instances of Spybot listed. I assume one is the original installation (its not shown but its v1.3, I think) and the other is shown as v1.5.2.

Minor thing, but I like to keep things neat and tidy, so can anyone tell me a way to remove the old installation from the list and be sure I don't adversely affect the new installation?

Interesting! I only updated it on 30th January, also on dialup, but it didn't take an hour and a half. The .exe was 9.7 MB and Add/Remove says it's using 25.40 MB on Disk (mind you, it also says it was last used in December 07, which is clearly wrong).

If you click on the 'Support details' link in Add/Remove it should confirm which version it refers to. I only have 1.5.2.20 showing up in mine.

I assume you should be able to remove 1.3 or 1.4 wthout affecting the latest version, but who knows with Microsoft? Perhaps you could try using Windows Explorer to open the folder of the older version and see if it has its own uninstaller, sometimes named unwise.exe.

Spybot v1.5.2 fixed all the troubles that 1.4.x had with taking for ever to open and scaning to A: drive etc.
But I did a clean install by uninstalling 1.4 and and running the reg file to clean up things then rebooting and deleting the folder lift over and I ran regseeker to clean up more. Then reboot and did a clean install.

See How to uninstall

Regarding download time. I live in a blind canyon in a remote area in the mountains above Santa Barbara, CA. The telephone lines are probably the oldest still in use in the country. Download speed is about 3kb/sec at best. We are not exactly optimized here for internet use.

There is actually only one version of Spybot installed on my machine, v1.5.2.20, at this point in time. The problem (if it is one) is there are two versions shown on my Add/Remove Programs list. The other one is v1.5.2. , not 1.3 as I indicated earlier. Clicking on 'Support Details' revealed that little factoid. My inclination is to just leave it alone.

Any other opinions/suggestions?

Raybro

raybro,

If all works and it only has the two listed in add/remove and you don't want to go tru doing it all over again then just leave it.
CCleaner can be used to delete the older version from add/remove.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
I would get the CCleaner v2.05.555 - Portable
- No Installer or
CCleaner v2.05.555 - Slim
- No Toolbar
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
So you don't get the Yahoo Toolbar installation.

Good to hear bearone2.

Now I use firefox so in the Immunize I only have protection on the IE and not sure I need them but seeing how IE is part of Windows I have the protection on them.
I have Firefox protected other ways so don't have the protection here because it really slows down page loads. You see icons foe firefox, IE and Seamonkey. Spybot says you only see things listed for what you have so yours may not look like mine. Plus it may list it wrong because I don't have SeaMonkey but Netscape. I do have Thunderbird too so not sure what the Seamonkey one is pointing to and I have asked at there forum back when 1.4 came out and I installed it but never got a reply.
Plus I will not use the hosts file. I have my own hosts file and don't want spybot screwing around with it.
Now your see the hosts file list 3324 as protected but that is only because 3324 are already in my hosts file that are the same that spybot has in there list.
I use hostsman and have 4 hosts files put together and already have 82.764 sites blocked.
Also after any update to spybot and the Immunize open and checked Spyware Blaster to make sure all is protected there.
Like I said I got firefox protected other ways and the way I deal with cookies only sites I have listed can set cookies and all other are blocked without getting added to the block list.
So in Spyware Blaster I don't have any of the protection for firefox or can I even add them because of my firefox setting so for me it does not matter if I check them all as protected for firefox because it will not show up in the firefox block list.

That may be because you never had anything in your hosts file.
Like I have in mine 83,106 from Hostsman.
Spybot shows:
Unprotected: 4650
Protected: 3324
Total: 7974

So what spybot shows as protected is not from there file but is seeing the same sites they have that I already have from other hosts file.
If spybot made there hosts file better and made it so I could add it to hostsman update manager I would add it.
But from pass history they never updated there hosts file very much so was best not to use it. Hosts file will not do much good if the sites listed in it are no good.

Hostsman I use these 4 hosts file with it. http://www.abelhadigital.com/
MVPS HOSTS
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
hpHosts
http://www.hosts-file.net/
Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts
http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html
Peter Lowe's Ad server
http://pgl.yoyo.org/as/
Hostsman then downloads updates and Scan hosts for errors, duplicates and possible hijacks.
