Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Then Please be patient until an security member helps you with your problem.

Hi,

I can help you continue- please do this:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Have the file Saved To> your Desktop, change the location while the File Download box is up
by using the drop-down arrow....go to Desktop at the very top of the list> make it the location the file downloads TO.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi, Once a security helper starts assisting, they are the only person who can assist in your thread....we are volunteers and cannot be here all day long, so please be patient, we will always get back to you.
The first person who responded to your thread is not fully qualified to post help, he is in training to become qualified, though, so one of us had to take over the thread for him.

ONLY qualified security helpers may assist with malware cleanup at this site.

Oh, I found your other new threads asking for someone to take a look at the log...and I have deleted them, we only allow one thread per issue- please make all replies right here in this thread...

OK, now let's use this tool:

Please note that it runs only in Safe Mode, directions are below for everything

SD FIX
Please read all through the info so you know what will be done.
**Note that SDFix runs only in Safe Mode
**Also> any user account that you boot into, in Safe Mode, has to be at Administrator user level...
There is a Printable Version button up under the Thread Tools drop down menu that will let you print a nice text version of these instructions.
Alternate way to save directions:Open Notepad> Copy and Paste any text you wish into Notepad, and Save the file as something you will recognize like TSGhelp.txt and save it onto your desktop.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi,

Run Hijackthis again, put checks next to items I have listed that appear in your new Scan....(don't save a log this time)
**When you have them checked off, you *MUST CLOSE * all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, nothing open but Hijackthis, no email, games, chat, IM...including THIS window.... then, click "Fix checked" to remove items.

O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {84938242-5C5B-4A55-B6B9-A1507543B418} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object\iesplugin.dll (file missing)

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: - fairydom - (no file)

Fix the items, then close Hijackthis as above....

Update and run a full scan with AVG Antispyware, if anything except tracking Cookies is found, post the results> I have included our standard directions for scan settings and posting, just in case you need them:
  • 1. On the main window, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and
UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
    • 2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options. You don't scan just yet!
    • 3.If you were scanning now, you would Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
    • 4. When the scan finished you'd be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
HOW TO SCAN- Please note the scan is done in Safe Mode-read on
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Reboot your computer TO Safe Mode. Here's how:
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
  • Launch AVG Antispyware
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button!
  • 5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans.
  • Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20072020-142816.txt.
  • Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • 6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

[b]Also we need to see a brand new Hijackthis log, made after you scan with AVG A/S please. This should be the last of scanning we have to do.

Byte- the only other problem I have now is: when I close a window, it shows a blank page and the "windows has encountered a problem and has to close" comes up, with the "send don't send" options.
Other than that computer appears clean of any problems now.
Any suggestions to fix the above would be appreciated, thanks so much for your patience and help. this is a great site for assistance.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi, When you see the error, try click on the Send button, then on the blue More Information link you get, and see if there is any help offered...make sure you write down or save the information it shows you about any offending file or programs missing anything...

Also:

Did you skip a word in the error message? Was it more this way?

"windows explorer has encountered a problem and has to close" comes up, with the "send don't send" options.

***Note- How are you closing the window when this happens?

If the right-click with mouse method, or right clicking on anything in general causes the same error, try what is here:

http://mcpmag.com/columns/article.asp?EditorialsID=1116

Fix for right click/context menu causing Explorer to crash:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

I can't much until you do the above!

***Also note that doing the various fixes might make things worse. Of course back up anything important that you cannot afford to lose, if you have done that then you can go ahead and try things.

The ATFCleaner tool is safe to use, provided that no one has stored something by mistake in the temp folder locations.... there is not much I can help you with there.

You should realize that removing all Cookies, will affect the other users if there are other user accounts that other people use....they must also KNOW or have a record of all their usernames and passwords, for sites the require logging in, like our site here, banks, etc do. <<Warning! Otherwise, it's fine to use ATFCleaner with the settings shown down where the directions are....

For Windows Explorer:

Follow through what there is here, for help fixing this issue:

http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/in...howtopic=13784

Note that if you have a Windows XP CD, that has SP2 combined, you would use that CD....

Sometimes, just running sfc /scannow helps, even if you don't have the right CD....

You could probably use a temp file cleaning tool if you don't have anything like CCleaner or ATFCleaner, try this one:

ATF CLEANER
Download ATFCleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use it yet. We will use it in Safe Mode, later
As you probably know, deleting Cookies can result in you having to type in your username and passwords at ALL sites that use logins, like this site does, so if you willy nilly delete cookies, which is safe enough to do, you will have to re-establish these cookies and login the first time you visit any site like that.
ATF Cleaner has a way to save those cookies you would like to keep but it will require some time. If you DO KNOW or have saved all your Passwords and login usernames you can delete all cookies.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now.To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu"
Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Next, start up ATFCleaner:
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer.

Let me know how things go and I will try to find more for you.

Windows also can check the hard disk and filesystem for errors: Great tutorial here, a must see and save for anyone who wants to use chkdsk:

Try that and see if it fixes the problem. Let me know.

Hi, Looks like a compatibility issue or mismatched file, I am not an expert at all with these funky errors...

While waiting, here is something that you can do, so the person checking in later will have it handy:

Double-click the error to open it up and then click on the icon that looks like two pieces of paper. This will copy the full error. Then "paste" the error into Notepad. Do this for each one until you have them all listed in Notepad and then copy and paste the list in a reply here please.
Here's a thread where this was done, so you know what the list should resemble; Post #19 here:

We may end up, with you doing the error checking on hard disk, etc anyhow, but I would hold off just now until the thread is checked by that other person, please.

If it's an Iexplore error you are getting -- this is an applications error. While a Dr Watson log may be created for it, they are all but unintelligible.

However if you select the "more information" clicky on the Iexplore.exe error when you get it -- you may also see a faulting module.

It's possible this has been recorded in the Event Viewer > Applications Log. So follow instructions to copy/paste any errors you are getting there.

Is there a pattern to the error?
