Unhappy wurviy.exe
Hi, I have ZA security suite which I'm happy with. Over the past week or so, it's asked me about 4-5 times whether it should allow a file called wurviy.exe to connect to the Net and I keep on saying "no" but I have not ticked that little box in ZA "remember this action" as I don't know to which program wurviy belongs. It's located in Windows/system32.
The only unusual Net activity I have been doing recently is to d/l some tv movies from Bit Torrent. I've done several searches in Google and other search engines but they all come up a blank.
Anyone know what the heck wurviy.exe is please?
Thanks for any help!

Hi,

That file is a good candidate for a malware file...would you like to see if it is?

Let's have you post a log from Hijackthis and maybe we can spot anything out of place:
go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • On that page, select one of the servers in the list under the Free Downloads heading
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

_ _ _ _
Please also do this:
  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Hi,

Please note that the tool I want to you get and use only works in
Safe Mode Directions for it are below:

SD FIX
Please read all through the info so you know what will be done.
**Note that SDFix runs only in Safe Mode
**Also> any user account that you boot into, in Safe Mode, has to be at Administrator user level...
There is a Printable Version button up under the Thread Tools drop down menu that will let you print a nice text version of these instructions.
Alternate way to save directions:Open Notepad> Copy and Paste any text you wish into Notepad, and Save the file as something you will recognize like TSGhelp.txt and save it onto your desktop.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a brand new HijackThis log made after SDFix is used

Ran SDFix as you suggested
Thanks once again for your time and kindness Byteman. Please see below. As you can see it deleted wurviy.exe which apparently got onto my machine as an unwelcome gift from someone from whom I downloaded a video (Video Add On folder comment below)

Hi,
There could be more to fix, please try ComboFix as it says below...the main thing is to follow directions.

You can install the Recovery Console, it is a precaution to allow you to be able to fix problems in case the removal of a malware causes a further problem. It is an option put there by the maker of the ComboFix tool.

You must turn off any protective programs, as it says....

However, using this command typed or copyed and pasted into the Start>Run line, might help, after you try and turn off the protective programs, we are seeing more and more that users just cannot get their settings right or have a great deal of trouble turning off programs real time protection:

So, you can use this in place of the "double-clicking ComboFix icon on your Desktop" method to start the ComboFix tool up and run the scan, it does it for you:

Please go to Start---> Run---> In the space provided, type "%userprofile%\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /killall & follow the prompts.

COMBO FIX:
Please read all through the info so you know what will be done.
Here are directions etc but I also have them below:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

There is a Printable Version button up under the Thread Tools drop down menu that will let you print a nice text version of these instructions.
Alternate way to save directions:Open Notepad> Copy and Paste any text you wish into Notepad, and Save the file as something you will recognize like TSGhelp.txt and save it onto your desktop.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    -----------------------------------------------------------

  3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. You can use the typed in switch command I had above in place of double clicking ComboFix!
  4. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  5. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" in your next reply..And, after you are done posting the log from ComboFix....run Hijackthis again, Scan and Save a Log....post the brand new log
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi, You use a USB flash or external hard drive, it's drive letter E:\

The ComboFix tool always disables autoruns on drives, so if you need programs to startup automatically when the drive is plugged in, we can replace autorun.inf on that drive.

This tool, Flash_Drive Disinfector will help protect your removable drives by placing it's own autorun.inf file on drives.
*Please insert your flash or external drive (whatever is normally your E:\ plus any other removable drives you or anyone else uses...you must check all those drives....not neccessarily all at once, but that will be good to do if you can)

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Your logs look OK....one way to double check work is to scan online, so when you have time, run one of these below, if anything is found infected you need to post the results as it says.

HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Or this one: Kaspersky online full scan
  • Please go HERE and click Free Online Scanner
  • Read and Accept the Agreement
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of the on line scanner results into a Reply here in your thread, along with a new HJT log and log from any other scans you run.
