Has support for this program from Lavasoft been stopped. I use the 2006 version which is all my w98se will support, although i understand there are problems with win XP as well. Any alternatives?

D/load Zip file to desktop.

Unzip to C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE

the newest version is adaware 2007. i have it and it works just fine.

The OP is running win98se, adAware 2007 only lists "Windows Vista (32-bit), Windows XP (Home and Pro), Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 (Pro and Server)" as supported operating systems

the link mentioned by blues harp should solve the issue
