Best security combos?
Well, I'm deciding which free security programs I should download that has good detection rates since I have ordered a new Dell Inspiron 530.

I'm thinking that good free programs are:

AVG Free Edition - anti-virus
or
Avast! Home Edition - anti-virus

Spybot Search & Destroy - anti-spyware
along with
SpywareBlaster - spyware prevention

I'm planning to make Mozilla Firefox my browser of choice with Adblock Plus and NoScript add ons.

And, what about a Firewall? Is COMODO good?

~Thanks for the help

You'll get very differing opinions, especially considering avast vs AVG
either way will probably suffice so long as you keep them up to date (personally I hate the "toy" looking interface used by avast ... its only a cosmetic thing so not a valid complaint as to its effectiveness). Something I would add to your list is superAntispyware, the free version is a great on demand scanner and seems to be growing in popularity here with the shielded crowd.

As for Comodo firewall, right now it looks to be the best rated firewall out there, amongst either free or paid ones.

Just a thought here, but since you are getting a "New Dell", it will more than likely have some sort of trial anti-virus/anti-spyware software/suite pre installed, usually either Norton, or Mcafee. These trial programs have "sometimes" proven to be difficult to remove completely, sometimes not. Do yourself a favor, and do a little research about the correct way to remove them "in case" you have a problem doing so. The forums are full of threads about not being able to completely remove trial software, and thus not being able to install the new software.

really, as i say it all comes down to personal opinion, some people like ZoneAlarm compared to COMODO and vice-versa... i personally use ZoneAlarm (paid) (although COMODO is a good free program), SuperAnitspyware, Avast, spybot, adaware Winpatrol and of course Firefox, it works well i have been safe and secure for a while now but most people wouldn't want all this running on their computer.

I think the trial 30 day subscription is to Trend Micro (or that's what the description looked like), so is trend Micro also as hard to remove as McAfee and Norton?

I`m going to have to bow out on Trend Micro, as I am not familiar with it. May be someone who has had experience with removing it will come along, and chime in. If not, remember, Google is your friend, you can always look there to see if anyone has had problems removing it, but you never know, you may not have a problem. But, I always try to remember the old boys scout motto, "Be Prepared", just in case.

Some one should just make one good program.I think most of those companies making those programs are just getting rich !!

And Norton and Mcafee use to be so good and now look 30% of the stuff it does not remove or find.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

I looked up on Google a solution to the removal of trial trend Micro programs.

I'll give you a link to it: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...pc-cillin.html

Thanks for the help here. If the computer does come with McAfee or Norton, I'll be sure to follow your advice, IMP49

I am not all that positive about the free solutions out there. However, of those you have mentioned, I would go with avast! over AVG, I would choose neither of the spyware packages you reference. And I would definitely go with FireFox with AdBlockPlus (your choice on NoScript).

My preferences are listed on my website, but they are not free. Not expensive, either.

Well, what free spyware programs are free and have good high detection rates?

I guess I can just get one, do a Kapersky/Panda scan, and if I find malware, I guess I'll just ask Tech Guy forums to help me fix it :P

But seriously, what are your suggestions? Anybody?
