I don't know if this is the best place for....
I just have a question: What is HKCU software/microsoft/windows/current version/run?
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I know it slows down my computer but every time I turn it on, it shows up when I go to RUN, MSCONFIG, STARTUP. I uncheck it and next time it is back again. Would appreciate any input you have on it.

Basically what you are doing is stopping certain applications from running on
startup. If you untick them and they become re-ticked after a restart what you
need to do is open the actual application which you are trying to stop and look
for a option in the application to not run on startup.

To answer your other question:
What is: HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

This is a registry path which contains all startup applications.
Firstly I wouldn't recommend changing anything in the registry if you don't know
what your doing (you can cause a lot of problems), having said this if you still want
to go there go to start -> run and type "regedit" and hit enter.

HKCU == HKEY CURRENT USER

Hi check links for info on msconfig.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

As said by blackice87..be careful of any changes you make in the Registry..or will cause yourself many more problems.

Why don't you post a HJT log which will show what's running at startup.

Go to this site http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...?page=download.

Click on 'Download HijackThis Installer'.

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop, or to the location where you normally download.
*Double-click on HJTInstall.exe.
*Click on Install.
*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
*Click on the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile button'. It will scan and the log will open in notepad.
*Click Save to save the log file.
*Click on 'Edit > Select All' then click on 'Edit > Copy' (or Ctrl-C) to copy the entire contents of the log.
*Come back to this thread and Paste (or Ctrl-V) the log in your next reply.

*DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

It's the Registry key that allows programs to run at startup.
Most are needed..some can become infected and can cause problems.

Do not delete the Run path it'self..or you will cause your self more problems.

As suggested post a Hjt log.
