Solved: I need some help with Panda
Thanks for your time, especially since I just barely registered here.

I went to scan with Panda Activescan (free variant) on my Windows XP Pro computer, and all it does is hang on "Scanning processes in memory..." - so I closed everything, tried again with the same result, restarted in safe mode and tried again with the same result.

I have no idea why this is happening. Can anyone help me?

Which version of Windows have you?
RIGHT click "computer" or "my computer"
Left click "properties"

Which Panda product & version are you using?
Panda AV; Panda Internet Security; other?
2007, 2008, other?

ActiveScan can be run only from the internet, as far as I know? Is that to which you refer?

The computer I'm trying to scan with has XP Pro.

I think it might be an internal problem with Panda though (ie servers down) - can anyone verify this for me?

*Yes I'm using the online scanner, and yes I've checked for internet connectivity beforehand.

Which XP Pro Service Pack?

Which version of IE are you using?

The servers are up for me, at http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeuse...s/activescan/?

Have you cleared your cache?
Consider using ATF Cleaner, www.atribune.org

Check your event viewer for errors reported at the time of your failed scans.
start > run
delete contents of long, skinny, white box
type: eventvwr.exe
Click "ok"
Maximize screen
On the left, left click "applications"
On the right, RIGHT click on an error
Left click the double sheet of paper icon.
That will copy the information to your clipboard.
Return to this thread.
Right click in the composition area or your reply.
Left click "paste".

Repeat for "system".

None of the error in Applications relate to Internet Explorer, they're for other programs like Pidgin and Firefox. Additionally, there are no errors listed at all in System - would you still like me to post one of these firefox-related errors to the forums?

PS: When you checked to see if the servers were up, did you actually try to scan? What happens is, I get to the scan page fine, install the browser plugin (after deleting it from my objects and checking to see that C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files is empty, and it is), and then proceed to immediately lerp from 0 to full completion on the update bar (where it should be installing and updating the necessary files, taking about 5-10 minutes on cable) and then jump to the updating of the virus patterns, which also occurs almost instantaneously. Afterward I'm shown the screen where I can click "scan my computer", and it hangs on "scanning processes in memory" for an hour or more, and then displays the screen "no potential threats were found", but I have no way of knowing that it actually did any scanning, and I'm pretty sure it didn't.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2, and Windows XP Home SP2 on 2 different machines with this same result - any idea what I can do about it? Last night I was getting a very long error that I didn't save whenever I went to the page (on any of my hosts), so I almost want to guess that something is wrong with the service, however unlikely that might be.

Thanks again.

No. Post only that which is pertinent, unless you are trying to run ActiveScan with FF.

""no potential threats were found", but I have no way of knowing that it actually did any scanning, and I'm pretty sure it didn't."

Do you have an active "save report" button, after the scan has completed?

I have had no problems scanning, using Panda's ActiveScan, during the past week.

If you look at the other security & malware removal forum, you will find threads in which Panda has been used, recently.

For example
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...ants-load.html

Someone else posted that Panda's ActiveScan quit at 75%.
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...ws-xp-hjt.html

Have you cleared your cache?

Hi, Panda Activescan may appear in Add/Remove Programs, did you try uninstalling it there?

*Doing that may be the same as deleting the ActiveX control but it might be also removing the database so you can install a new one, there might be something corrupted with the old.

There might also be a long delay, before the actual scan starts-

that is, after you have downloaded the second long "Update for detections" or whatever it is called....the second progress bar....then, the "Scan" button will become active, you select what you want to scan, (Entire computer, all local hard disks, etc) and THEN you can hit the Scan button, that is the first time the scanning process is actually running.

I see quite a few systems where a popup blocker, including Yahoo, IE's, Google's etc block the window, but that does not sound like your problem cause you said you can get the control downloaded....

taskmgr:
Once you have reached this stage: "all it does is hang on "Scanning processes in memory..." ", you are beyond Byteman's step "you select what you want to scan, (Entire computer, all local hard disks, etc) and THEN you can hit the Scan button, that is the first time the scanning process is actually running.
"

On a computer running Win XP Pro SP2, with IE 7, on which Panda ActiveScan is currently installed, I have 3 Panda folders:
C:\Program Files\Panda Software
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Panda Software
C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Platinum 2005 Internet Security
None of those contain information about PAV

I have Panda files in
C:\windows\system32\ActiveScan

During 2005, I used Panda Internet Security 2005 on said computer.

After uninstall PAS, & a reboot,
C:\windows\system32\ActiveScan is no longer present.

The number of add ons is significantly reduced, as well.

Please provide a list, or screen shot of your add ons for IE. I have attached mine, for comparison.

After re-installing PAS, C:\windows\system32\ActiveScan is again present.

The IE add ons have returned as well.

I just tried uninstalling it via add/remove programs and I think that fixed it - I've got to run out soon this afternoon so I can't test it thoroughly today, but thanks a *lot* for all the replies and the help, and if I run into anything else I'll post back here.

As far as I can tell this resolved the problem (panda now takes its time updating and seems to scan normally on 2 of the machines I've run it on) - thanks a lot.
