Question Solved: HELP W/Security Problem Urgent!!
When logging into websites where I pay my credit cards and bills online, the little secure lock at the bottom of page no longer appears and in that place it says "Internet".
Several things have occured on my computer of late. The first being is that Verizon dropped my MSN Premium Service after my modem and router from Verizon quiit working. It took ten calls to Verizon Techs in India to determine that problem and think due to language barriers. Anyway, now have a new modem/router combination on a wireless system wtih two computers running on it. Then when installed the new modem'router I could no longer use my MSN Premium. The problem with that was it came w/free McAfee Anti-Vuris and so I had to uninstall McAfee as it wanted me to purchase it now. I've had it for five years now!! So, instead I've downloaded the free AVG Anti VIrus Program and also idownloaded the Free Zone Alarm Firewall. I was running Housecall before installing the AVG and it found ADWARE_WINAD and had Housecall clean it and delete some tracking cookies at same time. Then today when I went to pay my bills and access my bank acoount online, found tht little lock at the bottom of page was missing. I don't know which or if any of these events removed it or what the problem is. Has anyone a clue? I am afraid to access these websites now.
Please help!! I pay 99% of my bills oline and have a few due next week and the secutiy lock is missing when I access my online bank account also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. So, please, please help!
I am running Windows XP that came with the computer.
Seocnd problem possibly? The Zone Alarm doesn't recognize the AVG!! Is that a problem??

Thanks!

Hello.

The lock is generally displayed in the status bar.
With IE open, left click "view".
Is there a check mark to the left of "status bar"?

If not, left click "status bar".
Report the results.

If you don't see "view", on the right, look for "tools".
Left click "tools"
Left click "menu bar".

If that didn't solve your problem, do the following, please.

RIGHT click "my computer".
Left click "properties".
Which version of XP?
Which Service Pack?

Open Internet Explorer.
Left click "help"
Left click "about IE"
Which version of IE?
Which update versions?
If you don't see "help", on the right, look for "tools".
Left click "tools"
Left click "menu bar".

With IE open, delete the contents of the address bar.
Type: https://bankofamerica.com/
Press the "enter" key on your keyboard; or left click the "green arrow", or "go" button.

Now, is the lock icon visible?

#2.
If your internet service provider is a company OTHER THAN MSN, then your MSN Premium service will not connect.

#3.
ZA & AVG.
You may have to manually configure ZA to recognize AVG.

If you don't know how to do that, you might want to consider a different firewall, such as Comodo, which is also free, for personal use. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

ZA user guide

4.
Until we sort his out for you, you might need to find a different way of paying your bills. Do NOT go to a library or use any other public computer to pay your bills.

I found this in the "help section":

What does it mean when I have both secure and non-secure (mixed) content?

Secure and non-secure content, or mixed content, means that a webpage is trying to display elements using both secure (HTTPS/SSL) and non-secure (HTTP) web server connections. This often happens with online stores or financial sites that display images, banners, or scripts that are coming from a server that is not secured.

The risk of displaying mixed content is that a non-secure webpage or script might be able to access information from the secure content.

Note

Internet Explorer uses an encrypted protocol called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to access secure webpages. These pages use the prefix HTTPS, while regular webpages use HTTP.
I'm having trouble using some websites that include mixed content, what do I do?

If you are having trouble using sites that include mixed content, you might want to temporarily have Internet Explorer allow all mixed content.

To allow mixed content

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab, and then click the Custom Level button.
In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll to the Display mixed content setting in the Miscellaneous section, and then click Enable.
Click OK in the Security Settings dialog box, and then click OK to exit Internet Options.
Note

After allowing mixed content, you will see webpages with both HTTPS and non-HTTPS content, but Internet Explorer will not show the lock icon.
Related Topics

In the address bar when I go to one of the sites to pay bill online it displays the "https://" before the actual site address for log in. But I also get a security box warning also on each page.

Note that it says if "enable mixed content" is checked it will not display the seciurity lock.

Is this "safe" or should I uncheck that box??

I have Windows XP Home Edition with Servie Pack 2. All updates have been installed.

Also the latest version of Internet Exolorer.

I need answers to each of the questions I asked.

This "Also the latest version of Internet Exolorer." is insufficient.

Open Internet Explorer.
Left click "help"
Left click "about IE"
Which version of IE?
Which update versions?
If you don't see "help", on the right, look for "tools".
Left click "tools"
Left click "menu bar".

Please answer the other questions, also.

For your 1st question of #3, please see

I am running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 and IE 7. The Status Bar and Menu Bars are both checked.
I typed in the https://www.bankofamerica.com and the security lock is still not showing. There is what I find to be a Phishing Filter Icon in its place. It has a red circle with a slash across the circle and behind the red circle is an eye icon. Maybe it has something to do with the Phishing Filter, which I didn't even realize I had until now. I found it under tools on the right and says Automatic Website Checking is on. Possibly this filter has replaced the security lock Icon. But don't understand why the red circle is there?? Would this have something to do with this problem? I don't think this Phishing Icon has been there too long as never seen it before until now and only when I visit websites like online banking and pay on line websites.
I work so I haven't yet had time to address the AVG/Zone Alarm problem yet.
If I failed to answer any other questions, please advise and will do so.
Thanks!

M:
Please look at this page.

Please send a screen shot, of your screen, when IE is at the https://bankofamerica.com site.

Thanks for the information about your IE version.

How to create a screen shot.
Creating a screen shot requires:
1. a keyboard with a key labeled "Print Screen". This may be abbreviated "PrtScn", "PrntScn", or some other variation. It is usually to the right of the F12 key
2. a destination program. Microsoft WordPad, and Paint, which are built into Windows 95 and beyond, as well as Microsoft Word, not a part of Windows will suffice. My favorite is Paint, because it provides the greatest versatility. Paint saves images, by default, as bitmap files [ .bmp ], which are very large files, but we will work around that issue. Paint also provides editing features.
2.a. To open Paint
left click "start"
left click "programs" [ or "all programs" ]
left click "accessories
Left click "paint"
3. Press the "PrtScn" [ or similar button ] on your keyboard.
4. Open the destination program [ see # 2 above ].
5. Maximize the screen of the destination program.
6. Left "edit" across the top.
7. Left click "paste".
8. Save the file to your "Desktop", "My Documents", or other location of your choice.
8.a. If using Paint, save it as a .jpg / .jpeg.
Left click "file"
Left clicks "save as".
Near the bottom, where it says "save as type", left click on the down pointing arrow.
look for jpeg or jpg.
Left click on jpeg or jpg.
Left click "ok".

Come back to this forum & thread.
Left click the button "go advanced".
Left click the button "manage attachments".
Browse to the location of the file.
After you have found the file, left click the button "upload".
When finished, left click "close window".
Left click the button "submit reply".

You need to first take the screenshot of the window or whatever you want copied....you do that simply by pressing the PrintScreen key once.... MS Paint should NOT be open up on the screen....

Then, Open MS Paint, and using it's top menu hit Edit> and then Paste

The entire window should appear....then, you save the file, name it something....save as....> .jpg is the usual type.

(If you hit the Print Screen button while Paint is up on the screen, that's what will be captured as a screenshot...))

ok, i did the screenshot and saved it as a jpg/jpeg and am trying to send it. There must be a missing step. I clicked on "go advance" and then uploaded the file which it did but when clicked on close window the file did not appear and a box appeared telling me it was too short. So obviously something is not working here. There must be a step missing.
Sorry, I have never done this before!
Thanks!

Hi, Usually the problem is the file is "too big" in bytes for the forum software....maybe, switch the Save As > to .BMP (bitmap) will make the file big enough to send.

You seem to have the right directions for attaching the file...you Browse to the file saved on your drive....then Upload it...the file name should show in the small attachments window...just close the X of that smaller window, and go back to your forum Reply (you need to type a message in the blank reply!) and hit the Submit to post your reply along with the attached screenshot file.

Well, I don't know what is wrong. Both the jpg file and bmp file are under the size limits shown on that advanced window and I cannot get them there by uploading them. It will upload the jpb file but cannot get it to show in the box to send.
Is there a step I am missing here?

" It will upload the jpb file but cannot get it to show in the box to send. "

Your picture will not appear until you Submit your Reply....

that is, you only see the Path to the file, then you hit Upload....then, and only then, you see the filename in the small window.....not the forum reply, the manage attachments one....next, you Close the small window, but only after you see your filename....next, type something into the reply text space... and then, Hit Submit

" It will upload the jpb file but cannot get it to show in the box to send. "

Open Manage Attachments....Browse and hightlight the file you want to upload.....you don't need the picture open, this is just telling the forum software, which file you want to attach...

(Your picture will not appear until you Submit your Reply....)

that is, you only see the Path to the file, then you hit Upload....then, and only then, you see the filename in the small window.....not the forum reply, the manage attachments one....next, you Close the small window, but only after you see your filename....next, type something into the reply text space... and then, Hit Submit
