Every time I try to download my email I lose my internet connection. Why?
I am running Windows XP Home Edition and Norton Antivirus. I am having a continual problem that when I try to download my email from my POP3 via outlook it cuts my internet connection. I have a wifi that is reporting an excellent connection. I can get back online by disconnecting my modem and plugging back in. I can't understand why this is happening.

Can anyone help? This is driving me mad.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

Is the POP3 also your ISP? I'd contact them and ask for help...could be that too much spam is the reason. Not neccessarily being sent by your computer, it could be a contact that is infected and your email address is being spoofed.

Can you connect on another computer and check the mail?

Thank you so much for replying Byteman.

No the pop3 is provided by another company. I have accessed my messages on another computer. The problem seems to have improved as I added a Windows service pack and now I think it is probably a virus.

Could you take a look at my HJT log if I posted it or do I have to use the other forum?

Let's have you post a log from Hijackthis and maybe we can spot anything out of place:
go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • On that page, select one of the servers in the list under the Free Downloads heading
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

_ _ _ _
Please also do this:
  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Hi, Nothing I could call malware in the HJT log...

What else makes you think there might be a virus> Get any alerts from any program saying so?

If so, could you point me to a filename/and location it's in?

I believe, there is some configuration problem with Outlook, I am not well versed with Outlook, though.

Windows Live mail is being used, too?

Any problems signing into secure sites and/or ones that require passwords?

Thank you so much. No alerts have come up.

I am not sure what Microsoft live mail is. Is there a way I could reinstall Outlook. I don't want to lose any emails.

I guess you missed this part of my reply# 1

Please also do this:
Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
Copy and paste that list here in your reply

THis is Windows Live Mail> http://get.live.com/wlmail/features#ID0EAH

It has replaced Outlook Express, but not Outlook in MS Office.....

You might find this page helpful, too: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...218231033.aspx

Try the Office Outlook Connector it's for Live Hotmail, or Office Outlook> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Byteman - I have read those articles. I don't use hotmail for my email so should I delete the Live Mail Programme? I use Outlook to access my POP3.

ccampton - Should I remove Mailwasher Free?

Hi,

If you don't need MailWasher UNinstall it from Add/Remove Programs. It may be blocking or preventing something with the email...

For now, why not do an online scan, that looks for more than just virus infection and will give us a good idea of any malware present:

Housecall online scan:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...security_tools

Or, this one:

Kaspersky online full scan
  • Please go HERE and click Free Online Scanner
  • Read and Accept the Agreement
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of the on line scanner results into a Reply here in your thread, along with a new HJT log and log from any other scans you run.
