TechJob Interview coming up - Need a bit of clarification!
Hey all! I have an Interview for my university's library tech support desk coming up soon. I am quite nervous about it so I'd just want to clarify some answers i guess i need.

what is an I.P -
An IP is made up of octets, 4 of them. These are split into two sections, Net and Host. The Net always contains the first octet and is used to identify the network that a computer belongs to. Host or Node identifies the actual computer on the network. The Host section always contains the last octet. Overall an ip is an unique address to any device connected to the Internet.

what is dhcp -
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a communications protocol that assigns a device an IP address when it connects to a network. It leases addresses to devices so it can reconfigure networks in which there are more computers than there are available IP addresses when needed.

how to deal with a virus ridden pc -
What i would do is check if there is a virus software/firewall already installed. If not i would restart in safe mode and install AVG free or another available scanner. Then run a scan. I would be stuck after here though?

how to deal with an adware/spyware ridden pc -
Install Spybot s/d + Adaware. Restart in safe mode + run the scans and clean. Use HJthis maybe?

Thanks a lot people! Any help/advice would be great!
Tomo.

IP stands for Internet Protocol and usually means the IPv4 number address or ip addr - see here at Wikipedia.

DHCP is how an ISP can dynamically assign ip addresses to a customer each time they login to their Internet account. See DHCP. at Wikipedia.

firewalls don't deal with viruses.

Depends on the definition of virus. Few people seem to distinguish between a virus & a worm any more. In fact few people seem to distinguish between a virus & spyware. Personally I prefer the term 'malware' to include all of them, but that just doesn't seem to be catching on.

You're right that firewalls don't deal with traditional viruses, but they do deal with some worms. (And some worms function as virus 'droppers' so the line between them isn't always clear even when you do make the distinction.)
