Norton 2003 upgrades
I have Norton Internet Security 2003 and Norton Antivirus 2003 on my Windows XP computer. Despite being woefully out of date, I've been quite happy with it.

A few days ago Norton Internet Security started giving me subscription messages (as in buy one now, use a credit card). I was under the impression that I already had a subscription, but apparently it ran out. In any event, it's five years old now, so it's probably a better bet to just buy the new version of Norton.

However, I have two concerns.

1) I hear Norton is impossible to uninstall, so I don't know if it's possible to uninstall Norton 2003 in order to make room for Norton 2007/8. I can't find any advice anywhere on upgrading Norton, probably because it's so incredibly simple, but there's no such advice for people with no computer skills. (For instance, will the "old Norton" remain on my hard drive, try to scan my computer and try to make me buy a subscription extension?)

2) I heard Norton 2008 isn't any good and I should buy Norton 2007. If Norton 2008 is bad, what is bad about it?

Bonus question: Is it possible to find out what kind of power supply I have without opening up the computer? I just bought a new video card and need a 350 W power supply. However, I don't know what type I have, and might have to buy a new one.

GET RID OF NORTON PRODUCTS IMMEADIATELY!!

Yes, I meant to yell that. The 2003 products were the last of the decent products that ran and protected fairly well. The newer versions all run very poorly on even the newest systems. I used to highly recommend Norton back in the late 90's and early part of this decade, but since about '03 or '04, I recommend and use only AVG Antivirus.

You can find links to the Norton removal tools and AVG Antivirus at: http://www.HelpMeRick.com/links

Good luck.

I used to use AVG years ago. I only remember using it as an anti-virus. Does it also protect internet connections?

No, the AVG Free version is ONLY antivirus. I truly feel that if you use Firefox for your browser, use a router and Windows Firewall, you shouldn't need anything else for security. AVG does make a full blown security product, but I like the a la carte method of security better than a one size fits all.

I have Firefox (it's what I'm using now) and the Windows firewall. I'm a bit leery of removing a layer of protection though.

I don't know about routers, but since I have a fixed IP address I'm pretty sure I don't have one.
