Solved: Digital picture frames and Windows viruses
So, my mom got a digital picture frame by SOMI for her birthday. She has NOT connected it to her computer yet. Is there a way to scan the picture frame for viruses? Her computer DOES have anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed but her system is currently clean. She's running Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2.

Thanks!

Peace...

I regularly visit the SANS Internet Storm Centre (which is aimed at sysadmins), and I think they had some info on this subject towards the end of 07 and earlier this year.

If you search 'digital picture frames' there, you should find everything they had on the subject; http://isc.sans.org/

Logically, there's no way you can scan the picture frame's memory without connecting it to a computer. Rely on your anti-virus, etc. to catch anything that tries to run from the picture frame. And if you're as paranoid as I am (and have the resources) use a 'test' computer that you've freshly updated with security software & will reformat afterwards. Don't network the test PC to your other PC's though-if you miss something it could spread across the network. (Of course if you miss something then it'll spread when you connect the picture frame to your 'regular' PC, but I already said I'm paranoid which means not everything I do makes sense.)

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure if the picture frame would appear as a "drive" of some kind, which I could scan with A/V software. It's Friday, so what the hell... I'll connect it to the machine and see what happens!

So, I took a different approach. Since the frame also supports memory cards, I got a 2GB SD card for my mom and will train her to leave the write-protect tab in place EXCEPT for when she's actually putting photos on the card. While the card is in the frame, the write-protect tab should be engaged thereby protecting the card from the frame. The frame can read photos off the card but can't write to the card.

We'll see how that goes.

Peace...
