Norton Antivirus 2008 is slowing down XP
Has anyone else experienced this? Internet explorer especially. Any ideas within the settings to get NAV to kinda back off its resource usage? Overall, CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS?

Yes. Norton is a resource hog and slows down many computers. Since it is so common, it is also the first thing inactivated by many viruses so it offers no protection from them. The high resouce usage is part of it.

Get AVG.

I used AVG 7.5 on a PC I recently upgraded to XP (along with faster CPU and moe memory). Seems like 8.0 is getting more fatures and growing fat like Norton? I dunno if you can get AVG 7.5 anymore. I still had an install file..

Also, I tried out the free version of Online Armor for a firewall. I prefer its interface to Comodo, Far less busy and easier to use, in my opinion.

Hi fanny pack 2.0,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding.

A slowdown on your computer can be attributed to an infection on your system, a software conflict or a problem with too may applications loading at startup and not enough available resources For optimal performance with Norton AntiVirus 2008, your computer should have at least 512 MB of RAM, however 1 GB is recommended. You should also check your hard drive and make sure that there is sufficient free space available. I would also recommend that you run the Windows Checkdisk utility to make sure that your hard drive does not have any errors.

Please click on the link below for instructions on how to optimize your system resources.

Instructions for optimizing system resources

Next, check the Add/Remove Control Panel for any other antivirus applications that may be running, as they can cause a conflict with Norton AntiVirus. If there are any other antivirus applications installed please remove them from your system.

The next step is to make sure that you have the latest program and definition updates applied to your installation.

1. Launch Norton AntiVirus 2008 and select "Run LiveUpdate" from the left side of the window. LiveUpdate will then launch and check for and install any available program and definition updates.

2. When the LiveUpdate process has completed, restart your computer into Windows Safe Mode.

3. In Safe Mode, launch Norton AntiVirus, and select the 'Norton AntiVirus" tab at the top of the window.

4. Click on "Tasks and Scans" and then click on "Run a Scan" and then select "Run Full System Scan.

If there are any infections found on your system, repeat step 4 above.

Thank you,
Mike

I'm sorry, Mike, but Norton is a really bad piece of software.
If you guys from Symantec travel over enough number of computer forums, you should know, by now, how bad opinion your applications have.
I apologize, nothing personal here...

I'm another user who used to use Norton. I had similar slowdown problems. Very aggravating. I switched to AVG 7.5 and couldn't be happier. Works very well behind the scenes. I'd give AVG 5 stars. It simply works.

I've been using AVG for numbers of years, but their 8.0 version seems to be going in Norton direction.
Their suite is getting bloated, and there is a lot of installation problems, if you search the net.
After two days of fighting, I was able to to install 8.0 on my XP, but on Vista, I just gave up, and I went with Avast.

I used to be a fan of Norton and used it for years. It is bloatware and really bogs down a pc. I also used Bitdefender for a while. Version 8 thru 10 were ok. Then, Bitdefender 2008 went into the tank and was a stinker. People had been urging me to give Nod32 a try for years, but I hated the user interface. Finally, Nod32 reworked the user interface this year and the product is great. I'm a real fan of Nod32 now and love it. You don't even know its running and it doesn't place any perceptible drag on the pc at all. Plus, its one of the best antivirus programs at stopping infections.

It is nice that Mike does post to this site from time to time. Although in checking all of his posts he never seems to engage in a discussion with those individuals who have a complaint with his product.
It would be to their advantage for other software reps to post here as well in reply to specific issues.

fanny pak, I have been a Norton user for 9 years and I understand your problem. I had the same problem with AV and Internet Security. However, Norton came out a couple of years ago with 360 1.0. Now they are out with 360 2.0. All the memory hogging seems to have been fixed. 360 is extremely quite in the back ground, does not use much memory on startup, and version 2.0 only comes on for scans when your computer has been "quite" for a while. 360 has a few problems, but nothing I have found serious. The only problem I have found is with Norton Confidential. It seems to interfere with some legitimate sites with IE which causes hangups. They are working on that for me now. So you may want to try 360. It has some very good features that you will have to get use to. Good Luck.
