http and https sites
Hi,
I hope I'm posting this in the right forum...
I'm a member of an affiliate program that requires that I enter my Social Security number into a field on the "account info" page of the affiliate Website. The complete SS number stays visible on that page for as long as I have an account.
When I joined the program the site was an http site and I told the company that I wasn't willing to have my SS number sitting on a non-secure site.
They have now put up an https version of the site that I feel OK about entering my SS number into, but they have left the http access to the site up - I can still log in with the http address and see my SS number there.
Am I endangering myself by putting the SS number up via https if I don't access the http version of the site (and therefore transmit the SS info over an non-secure http connection)?
I hope that's clear - thanks!

SSL is actually used for transmission of data between a computer and the site.
You are right to want to send your info securely on https so it doesn't get
intercepted.
The security of information on the site is the responsibilty of the people
running the website.
If the members area is properly secured,it should be very difficult for
anyone but you and site adminstrators to access it.
Make sure to use a strong password and not give it to anyone, including through email.
If you want to login,go to the site and login on an https page.

I wouldnt part with my social security number lightly, who knows how safely will they guard your SS ? And why do they need it? If it is for identification purposes, a lot of sites just use your email address as id as it is unique enough to be an identifier. All it takes is a weak link somewhere and the crooks are in and can steal the SS and account info. Look at TJX which lost credit card info, in their case it was weak WiFi protection, and they lost a boatload of credit card numbers. In my opinion its better not to give it out in the first place,

Some affiliate and reseller sites require the info for tax purposes.
