Solved: Leave router on or off?
I have Avast and Comodo...etc, but I am in the habit when I leave the house or go to bed, I unplug my network. I guess I am just paranoid of someone hacking in.

I am using WPA, but a few weeks ago I noticed that in the properties of my wireless adapter in the "preferred networks" I had mine, but I had another one that said "ANY" and that made me think. Someone hacked me......so should I continue unplugging my router when I am no longer using the network?

Thanks!

Yep, you are paranoid.

I guess you are saving the environment though

And you used a "GREEN" smiley.....so you must be environmentally conscientious? lol

I know my neighbor leaves her running all the time, but not sure why there would be another "preferred Network" on my system. If you can explain that paranormal activity, then I will agree, I'm over paranoid.

Just delete it. Any usually means that if you can't find a network, say you are in an airport, and not near your preferred network (home) it will search for any available and tell you whether they are secured or not, most airports offer free wireless now

MORE GREEN

Ok, I think I'm getting it now. I had only used my laptop here in my house, but if I did take it somewhere, OR if my network was down and I tried to connect, it would create that "ANY" network that it was trying to connect to?

Thanks!

Even at your house, I'm sure you must have careless neighbors who leave their networks unsecured And when you browse to see available networks, you probably can see some.....may even be able to see some secured ones as well

Lmao. Relax. Most routers come with built in firewalls anyhow. I've never heard of turning off the router, I dissconnect my internet plug from my computer everynight, its just a habit.

If someone "Hacks" your network what will they do? Steal ur internet? Lmao, You can enable Mac Filtering and that disables any devices that are not listed as "Allowed" not to access the internet (I'm pretty sure of that because my iPhone and xBox 360's Mac Address had to be added or it couldnt connect)

If you are that paranoid about hack attacks, You should upgrade your firewall to Zone Alarm Pro or Zone Alarm Secuirty Suite as they are the most effective in my opinoin

Ummmmm....YES! I have a VERY special internet....lmao

No, I was told that if they could crack that they could get onto your computer......I'm just repeating what I was told....I agree, Zone Alarm is awesome....though you can't even change your mind without it flagging it. lol

No one is going to get on your computer with the power of Zone Alarm and a good Anti Spyware and Antivirus. New threats always come out everyday, just have the correct security software and you will be fine.
