Removed virus and now computer won't start
I downloaded AVG to remove a Trojan virus that was on my (Windows XP) computer. When I restarted my computer, like the program told me to, it came on, but I wasn't able to access any programs. Several of the desktop icons looked like white boxes. The mouse would move, but if I scrolled over the task bar it turned into an hourglass. I have tried removing the battery from the laptop and restarting it again. I don't know what else to try! Can anyone help me??

Do not panic

Do you know the direct path the Trojan was located and the name?

Your computer acting like that after a trojan removal is strange. I would reccomend removing the trojan manually in safe mode ( I can give instruction if you give me name and location or general location atleast )

If that doesnt work, We will move on to diffrent methods.

To be honest with you, I am not very computer saavy, and I have no idea where it was or what it was called. I just remember reading the list of threats that AVG removed and Trojan downloader was on everyother line....

Can you boot in safe mode and get the AVG Logs and post them here? Do you know where to get the Last Virus Scan AVG log?

To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe mode - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows, turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen

I think we should wait for someone more experienced with AVG to come here. They will probably know where the logs files would be located.

Hi try in safe mode.
Go to Start>Run and type.
msconfig
Click on Launch System Restore choose date prior to the problem.
Restart normal mode and check programs etc.
Then go back to safe mode and rerun Avg.
Let us know the result.
You may need to clean out old restore points to clear out virus etc.
What other Spyware programs do you have installed?

Restored computer and ran AVG. No viruses and worked great for a day or so. Ever since the computer restarted after automatic updates from my computer, the same problem is happening. When I try to restore it again, it says that it cannot be restored to the particular date.

There seems to be something happening when your comptuer restarts. I think you should explain your situation in the HiJack this section and post a HiJack this log.
