Advice on detecting a virus Hey guys, my friend's computer seems to have a nasty virus on there, or perhaps something else that's causing the problems.
Toshiba Laptop
Windows XP Home SP2
The original symptoms started out with certain sites not browseable (which should always be up, such as google or msn), and wireless connectivity going up and down intermittently.
After running a few scans with Norton, spybot, adaware, and even pulling out the HD and sticking it into another computer and scanning it with AVG, I've removed a few trojans that I found, but now, I'm having some other issues.
When I boot up, sometimes, it will let me type in a password, but not log in. If I hit ctrl+alt+del twice to try and log in as administrator, it freezes and doens't allow me to do anything. If I log in, I can do a few things, but then it will freeze up, the internal fans are really loud at this point and never stop, and it will not be responsive to any keys I press. Even if I try to get to task manager, nothing happens. I've waited over 10 minutes to make sure it was not moving slowly or something else.
I can log in as safe mode and boot up just fine, and the computer seems to work properly.
Hopefully you guys have some advice on how I can more easily narrow this problem down, and perhaps some other scans I can be doing to find this.
I've tried scannning with Trend Micro's free online scan as well, and that does not detect anything anymore as well. Perhaps it's not a virus, I'm open to different possibilities
