Hi All,
I had a very inexperienced user notify me on a virus concern using Avast. Unfortunately, I was not able to retrace or evaluate her steps. But in the Window that came up when she went to a web page, there was a notice that 2 high risk files were found on the page with a notice to Remove All, or Ignore All.
Uncertain about how Avast deals with these issues and because McAfee Site Adviser indicated a Yellow warning, I was concerned that the indicator might not be from Avast, but some sort of hoax created by the website. So I did a CTRL+W to close the Window. IE displayed the message, "Are you sure that you want to navigate away from this page." I could not CTRL+W out of it, so I just clicked OK and the browser closed. I was trained that when you are unsure of a prompt and need to close the window that you should use CTRL+W.
I did a Standard Scan with Avast and nothing came up. I also did a System Restore go-back to last night so that everything would be OK. I will run other security software tonight just to make sure. Now some questions:
1.) When I did the CTRL+W does that count as an Ignore response in Avast? I just want to make sure that I didn't download those files.
2.) How long does it take to do a Full Scan in Avast as opposed to a Standard Scan? I have an 80 GB hard drive.
3.) When Ignore is hit on a Virus Scan Window, does the next scan undo the ignore? Since I did not click Ignore and did a rollback, I don't think I have anything to worry about. I would have done a Thorough Scan, but didn't want to wait 6 hours, if it takes that long. In Avast, for future reference, how do you unignore an ignored file?
The Results Page at the end of the scan displayed the items that were not scanned.
I will run Spybot S & D, Adaware 2007, and Housecall tonight. I will do a full scan on Avast as well, if it does not take much longer than a standard scan. Will post back results. Thank you.
Update: Ran a thorough scan of Avast. No infections found. The list showed some files that could not be scanned. Also updates on scans with Adaware 2007, Spybot S & D, Housecall, and Windows Defender turned up nothing. Did I handle this threat the right way?
