The Best Security Set Up? And Free?
Hi all,

because of your always excellent help, we have returned for more...after many suggestions here to lose norton antivirus, we did remove it from our pc using norton removal tool.
Question #1 is that sufficient to truly get it all out?

second, we are piecing together a new security system, so far have running spybot for spyware and AVG antivirus 8.0 free edition. We are looking for a firewall recommendation, currently using windows firewall.

would love to tweak system for great performance, will faster performance be noted since we have rid ourselves of the horrible norton antivirus? Will these smaller and more efficient "alternative" programs be less of a load?

as always, thanks!

Hi bluemoonct,

Are you using Vista or XP?

Vista has a good fully configurable firewall.

Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

i highly recommend blink anti virus from eEye security,,it's free for 1 year but i just downloaded another free year's subscription,,it also has an excellent firewall..& i removed AVG,,which i had installed because i thought i could not get blink again ,,..you don't want to try and run two anti virus programs at the same time.
give blink a try,,works well for me,,,best i have found.

I've found Windows firewall and a router to work fine. However, if you do not have a router or would like additional protection, you can install the inquisitively annoying Zone Alarm firewall.

If you use "blink" then you get rid of spybot & AVG & shut off windows firewall.
blink has it's own firewall, but if you use a router then you can shut off the blink firewall,if you choose to do so.
I leave the blink firewall on,just because it alerts & then asks me if i want an outgoing connection to take place..
Actually, if you have a router then you really have no need for a software firewall,,,But then again, the "bad guys" have ways around any firewall.
So i say have a router, then try blink from eEye .

Comodo Firewall- http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

AntiVirus- http://forums.comodo.com/anti_virusm...html;msg152033

I use both. Why?

I picked the Firewall because of the Leak Test Results and features.

I picked the AntiVirus because of its simple and got the highest rank on AV-Comparatives.org for 4 years

Nobody ever talks about Comodo antivirus or antispyware, but that's another option. I've had an all-Comodo suite running on one of my rigs with no problems whatsoever for over a year. It's easy on resources and very unobtrusive.

I'm no expert, and of course everyone thinks their AV is fine until they get infected, so this is just an idea for discussion. I decided to give it a try largely based on the fact that Comodo has the top rated firewall, so maybe they can also create a good AV. At any rate, so far so good.

For spyware ( And immunization ): Spybot S&D and SUPERAntispyware

Pure immunization: Spywareblaster

Firewall: Comodo Firewall
((Version 2.4.18 or 3.0.24.368)) <-- 2.4 is easier to use, 3.0 is in my opinion better.

I would recommend you to have all of the above softwares.
Those are one of the best, free programmes out there

EDIT: About the comodo firewall and antivirus discussion:

Their firewall is recommended, but when it comes to antivirus.....I would rather install AVG or avast!.

CAVS 2.0 is a Beta program with a 75% detection rate. When CAVS 3 comes out thts a diffrent story

When CAVS comes out I will switch Avira AntiVir Premium to CAVS 3 but I perfect Comodo Firewall PRo and Avira AntiVir Premium until CAVS 3 coems out.

They arent even that popular, The popular products are Norton and Mcafee and they suck.

correction regarding my last post here...i had to recently remove comodo firewall as it was blocking necessary pc files or commands..first it was refusing my position as pc administrator, regardless of how many times i 'adjusted' my user options..it even blocked my authority to open many of my folders and i even couldn't open/load certain programs.this all began when i updated (upgraded)to comodo firewall pro 3. dang it...and so as opposed to going to detailed lengths to correct the issue i removed it and am using online armor..i've read good things about that 'brand' and so far am pretty happy with it in my 12 years of being online i'd heard of online armore before, but for the life of me can't recollect where exactly(although i'm sure it had to do with my being online).sorry about this long update regarding my last post, but i thought someone might find it helpful..you never know/.
