What security software for Firefox Portable?
Hi all. I am using Firefox Portable 2.0 on a USB stick. I have ClamWin antivirus software but I was wondering if there was some adware/spyware protection available like spywareblaster that would work from a USB stick, or perhaps a database of sites that should be blocked. (I assume that it would be unwise to use the browser without extra security software?)

Thanks.

Hi Sharker,

Get the NoScript, ShowIP, and netcraft Anti-phishing Toolbar Firefox add-ons. You could also add (if you do not already have) a Hosts file to block known web sites that should be blocked. Search for: MVP +Hosts file

Hi Tom, thanks for the suggestions and sorry about the slow reply. I have installed the add-ons you mentioned and they seem useful.

But I wasn’t sure how to add a hosts file to block known websites? Also do you know of a free adware scanner that can exist on a usb drive?

Thanks.

Sharker.

Hi. Can you tell me how to add a hosts file to block known web sites that should be blocked? (On portable Mozilla.) Is there an easy way to keep the file up to date?

Thanks.

Try Avast Antivirus Portable. It scans all incoming traffic and can perform scans on the local machine, and can disinfect files.

Hi all. I’m still looking for a way of installing a hosts file to block known web sites that should be blocked. Or other adware/spyware software for a USB drive. Any Ideas?

Thanks.

Try installing Dr. web. It comes as an add-on for Firefox. You can use it to scan downloads.

You should have antivirus applications installed on all your computers, so I don't know why you need a portable AV, anyways:

Spybot S&D, CWShredder, and Ad-Aware for Spware. Clamwin and Multi Virus Remover for antivirus. I'm quite certain that's all you'll find.

He needs portable AV software in case he uses this flash drive on public computers. Public computers are notorious for infecting flash drives. Try Clamwin AV portable from portableapps.com. It has a nice feature you can use to scan processes loaded in system memory. If there is a malicious process, eject the flash drive. Just install clamwin to your flash drive.

Ok, I thought he was using it on his own computers. Thanks.
