Solved: Trying to pick from 3 free AV options
I currently have AVG 7.5 Free on my system and have been very happy with it. It recently started asking me to update to 8.0, and some quick research (including here) seems to indicate that it's become more of a system hog now. I'm considering switching to Avast or Avira, but not sure if those would be a move up from AVG 8 in terms of how much system resources they use and so on. I run Vista SP 1 Home Premium. Any recommendations in terms of which of the those 3 options are best for me would be much appreciated.

Just a comment. I have the free Avast on both of my machines & have been very happy with it. Updates defs almost daily. Systems are fast, not bogged down as B4 with Norton.

I still use AVG 7.5 as it's superior to most other choices (including AVG 8.0)... why not stick to it?

Well, I was planning to stick with 7.5 until the end of the year, when they'll stop offering free updates, unless I find something better. I'm just looking around already for a replacement. Both Avast and Avira look good, and I haven't tried AVG 8.0 yet, so was trying to see what the consensus is about which of the 3 is best. My main concern is not slowing my system down (I had Norton before and it was horrible) while still having decent protection.

Also, forgot to mention --- I'm getting annoyed by the constant nag screen to upgrade to 8.0. It's popping up every day now. Small thing, I know, but it annoys me.

I use AVAST and have had it for two years now with no problem. Use to have Mcafee which is another system hog. AVAST has even caught stuff Mcafee didn't.

I wouldn't pass AVG 8. I have the commercial version on 2 boxes & Free 8 on my notebook. My family all run different versions. System hogging isn't really a problem with any of my machines, because like most people now, I have ample resources. They have caught nasties for me & my family before.

Avg 8 is quite simple to install, but the instructions could be clearer. Don't do it with an upgrade from 7.5 or you can go astray, either by downloading the free server version or being diverted to the professional site. The easiest way is to do a web search for AVG free, then follow it through. I find it great. I have it: - Pro. on Vista Business x64 & XP home. Free on Vista business x32 & My Brother & Nephew have Free on XP Pro. x64

Yep. That's what I did. Removed the 7.5, did a search for AVG Free, downloaded Version 8. Very simple and straight forward, even for me.

I've found AVG to be quite zippy, I don't know if you're going to see much of an improvement with Avast, which I also recommend. I can't speak for Avira, though, in fact I've never heard of it.
