My uncle saw a computer at a yard sale. Bought it gave it to my kids/grandkids. It runs extremely slow not sure if the computer or if it has problems.
Compaq 2 gHz, 192 mg RAM. XP home Version 2002

Open to any and all help. Will be slow to fix as we live in rural Maine and connect at 26.4 so takes a long time to download. Thanks for patience.

Hi some maintenance would be a good place to start.
Scan For Viruses.
Scan for Spyware.
Disk Cleanup.
Check Hard Drive for Errors.
Defragment Hard Drive.
Clean out Temp files etc.

Those found no viruses, a few spyware. disc cleanup completed. Defraged, no errors on hard drive found. Temp files done.

Now what?

Win Xp likes about 256Mb of Ram to run at it's best, a Ram increase would help.
Remove any seldom used programs etc.
Have you been to Microsoft's website and updated the system? [service packs]

Auto update on, but no clue what it has updated. Will check that out. Since XP needs 256 of ram to run at optimal capacity, other than to make someone spend money upgrading, why in blue blazes are systems packaged and distributed with less? I am an older, blonde, female, and that choices makes no sense to even me.

The update will take some time but worth the wait.
Xp will run ok on 192 Mb Ram but that will depend on what you use your system for.

LOL! Blues, you made some former teacher very happy indeed. Their goal was to teach you proper usage. Obviously you learned. As a veteran educator I can telll you in reality my main goal was to teach students how to be life long learners. If a former student told me they were still learning skills based on a learning skill I'd taught them, I would be happier than that they were using everything they had ever been taught.

My old fourth grade teacher must be rolling over and over each time we use the word ain't. Times change. English is a living language and living things change.

Updates were all done and seem to be ok.
