Norton AntiVirus 2008
This is dumb ole Tex again,
I have been having a problem since install of Norton 2008 back in March. It automatically does a (quick scan) after it automatically downloads an update. This happens almost daily but at different times. So I never know when it will start doing this. It also is doing it in the background so I can't pause it! Problem is it slows my computer down to a standstill while this " Quick Scan " takes place. Very frustrating! Anybody know what I can click on in the Norton options menu so it won't run this until I want to run the quick scan.

.....For faster computers the quick scan takes seconds. Literally. Like mine.

anyways...

Go to Settings

Virus and Spyware Protection

Rightmost tab

Add all disks that you want to exclude from scanning.

BTW, this applies to Norton 360...You might have to look around. good luck!

I thought my computer was fast. I have a 2800+ AMD Athlon xp processor, 512 MB PC 2700 DDR SDRAM Memory 120 GB 7200 RPM ULTRA DMA Hard Drive.

Not sure what all that means but it sounds fast!

Hi CorvetteTex,

Mike from the Norton authorized Support Team responding to your posting regarding Norton AntiVirus.

To disable the automatic Quick Scan that occurs whenever LiveUpdate downloads updates, please follow these instructions.

1. Open Norton AntiVirus.

2. Click on the 'Norton AntiVirus" tab at the top of the window.

3. Click on the "Settings" category to expand it's options.

4. Click on "Automatic LiveUpdate" and then choose "Configure."

5. Take the check out of the box next to "Run Quick Scan whenever protection updates have been received."

6. Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window and then click the "Ok" button.

If you make this change, I would suggest that you create a "Custom Scan" schedule that will run daily when you are not using your computer. Norton AntiVirus will check for and install updates multiple times per day to keep your computer protected from the many threats that are discovered daily, which is why the option to scan is set by default.

Thank you,
Mike
