AVG 8 slowed down scheduled backups

Why would AVG 8 have had an impact on my scheduled backups? I back up my laptop (Vista) to an external hard drive each evening and it always used to take 10 minutes or so and ran unobtrusively in the background. Since upgrading to AVG 8 (free) from 7.5 it now takes literally hours and slows down the whole laptop.

Anyone else found this? Any ideas what I can do?
I've always found AVG to be great, but am rapidly changing my mind

Is the AVG scan scheduled at the same time as the backup? If so, stagger them and give AVG 2-3 hours time to scan your system.

Peace...

No, the AVG scan is at a different time from the backup, no overlap.

I have found someone else on another forum with the same problem, apparently the Incremental Backup of Vista Backup backs up all the files (as if it was doing a complete backup). Could AVG 8 be doing something to mark files as modified when they're not, causing all files then to be backed up?

Maybe. Can you look at the Vista Backup logs to see if it's backing up the same files over and over again? Something else you can try is to DISABLE the automatic scanning AVG does (if that's possible) and see how the Vista Backup behaves.

Peace...

Try to see if it is the "resident shield"...i.e. Test backing-up with the shield disabled..

I noticed that even for copying a folder from one place to another this resident shield makes it 10 times slower.

Please tell us after you try

I gave up on AVG 8 in the end and went back to 7.5, backups now work perfectly. I'm going to stick with 7.5 for as long as I can in the hope AVG 8 will be much improved by the time I'm forced to upgrade! Other forums showed plenty of people with similar issues so they will have to address it sooner or later.
