As above, try having a decent anti-spyware program and also a decent firewall program running and updated.

Oh, and avoiding porn sites, warez sites, and no downloading suss emails also greatly helps increase security on a PC.

These two sticky threads at the top of the page ...
http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...w-tighten.html
http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...elp-tools.html

The hosts file works quite well, I use it to block myself from an online solitare gane site that proved too addictive.

I use Firefox with site advisor and noscript. The site advisor is only useful in Google to pre-screen where you don't want to go. Wish it worked on embedded URL's in a web page. The noscript is a pain-in-the-neck to get working on sites I trust, but is worth it in my opinion to prevent unwanted scripts and unwanted downloads on new sites. Almost every web site uses scripts, so it does mean extra work.

Spybot S/D is outdated and posted poor detection and disinfection scores. Try Norton 360.

You can avoid all the porn, warez, and other crap sites, but malware can still get on your computer. I don't think my grandma goes to porn sites but here comp was loaded.
