Unhappy AVG update
I have had AVG for quite a while and love it. I have AVG8 now, since it came out and like it very much.I use the free editions.
I'm on dial up.
This morning it wants to download an update of 8 mbs. Wow...I have never had a big one like that.
I start it and half way through, it says the connection failed. I am still connected to my dial up connection so it must be my connection to their server that fails.
What can I do? I can't be without anti vitrus protection. Help please

Yes I tried again, and then I shut down and am trying again. 8 mbs. isn't that odd?
The funny thing is it says everything is fine. It is only when I click on update now that I get this problem. It starts to dld then it stops then it says I might not be protected.
If I leave it alone, everything seems to be ok. What gives?

Hummmm
Just updated again .. and this time I got a new ~8mb download.
Then it ask me to reboot .. that's unusual ??
It must be a really big update ??
After the reboot .. My Zone Alarm firewall also wanted a new approval to connect.
Must have been some major changes.

I wouldn't panic just yet .. may have to give AVG time to get straightened out.

I haven't gotten the 8mb updated offered through auto update yet but I do know that AVG was planning on releasing a major update (service pack 1) sometime this month to address some of the complaints (about things like link scanner) that have been popping up a lot in their forums. Because of its size they may be trying to spread the server load a bit and not be offering it to every one at once.

edit - as I'm writing this the big update was offered, looks like there are various engine changes (including a kernel level change) so Noyb, looks like that's why it required a restart of windows.

Speaking of the Link Scanner ... If you want to know how to install AVG without the Link Scanner ..
see here .. http://free.avg.com/ww.faq.num-1241#faq_1241
Browse down to FAQ 1338

I wonder if they fixed it so you can disable it without getting an alert taskbar icon status.

that was supposedly one of the fixes, you can now opt out of it during the install process. If its installed and you disable it you still get the alert in your notification area (but no alert if you disable the add on from within firefox (which I've done) or IE.

If the system with AVG is a laptop you could bring it over to a friends and ask them nicely if you can use their internet if they have high speed. If it's not a laptop you could always bring the system over to their house as well.

That is if you are very afraid of this update.

I'm not concerned about the laptop. I'll do that at the library. It's the desktop one I wonder about. Is there something I could put on my key to transfer to the desktop?
I'm not afraid of anything, I can't dld because it fails to complete....

I'm not sure if this is possible, but check Grisofts website if they have a downloadable update that isn't via AVG. Then, put it on a flash drive (if handy) or burn it to a CD.

I can't update AVG free either and get the message that "update failed." The last time this happened I was told to go into update manager>settings>advanced>delete temp files. It worked and I thought I had written it down correctly but I must have missed something today because I can't find anything about temp files.

If anybody can help I'd appreciate it because it was an easy fix and I'm not comfortable with making major changes like computer savvy people are. Thanks.

All of my AVG installations have been giving me trouble for the past day or two. Updates will refuse to run, or fail partway through, or give an error about a control file not being found. Seems they are having a few issues.
