I just switched a PC to Avast's free version and think it is very good. According to task manager, there is no load at all, unless a scan is actively running. But Avast doesn't run on Vista yet.

Then there is AVG's free version. I would wait a few weeks for the new release which will allow you to disable the site protection feature, which has been reported to slow down some PC's.

I have Avast installed on my laptop running Vista and it works just fine

Thank you for correcting my error!

When the McAfee expires on my Vista laptop, I'll change to Avast then!

I was thinking of Online Armor Firewall, which I also have installed and appears to be a really easy to use firewall. That's not for Vista yet.
