For example:

I'm glad I'm not the only one this confused.
A complaint about AVG from 2004 hardly seems pertinent considering how fast AV programs change in their attempts to keep up with the baddies.

I think the fact that this poster spends too much time in Civilized Debate has clouded his vision

That was four years ago, I'm pretty sure that AVG has at least changed their versions at least four times. You can't expect this guy to actually make sense when we're in 2008. If you watch your AVG, or any AV, they update daily (even every hour if set).

So the detection rate from then till now has greatly increased.

You're kidding right?

As to running faster, sure, anytime you disable any running process, especially virus scanners, your system will run faster. Not safer, but faster. Whatever floats your boat.

Good grief

Simply blaming AVG antivirus 2004 in that example is ridiculous even if it was now 2004-

We see infections like that and a whole ton or two worse, every day, on computers with the best software made installed.... why?

Most of the crap is being let through the open door by the owner/operator....who doesn't keep up with updating Windows or other software, doesn't use newer versions, or is not running enough protection and is using P2P apps to download things without scanning. Once infected, things get a whole lot worse quickly, so it may look like a massive amount of malware when it gets to the point of a Hijackthis log being posted at a forum..... A lot of it is due to unaware owners and other users who are just going to do this and that and end up with infections.

Malware can build up over time, and up until the last few years the best programs could not detect some of the worst---- let alone fix that kind, or protect against it.

The items shown in that log piece from 2004 are not viruses, and AVG at the time, was not as good at dealing with spyware/trojans etc....it is whole lot better these days be assured.

It never has been (and probably won't be for some time), one program that will be able to deal effectively with the ever changing types of malware found these days.

The protection has to be in place before you run into the malware and the computer operator has to guard against doing things that could infect- no matter what you use, something will come along that can get around anything you run. And there will always be those getting infected, because of all the above, no matter what they have installed.

Er....excuse me, I have run a scan on my cell phone, picked up some nasties the other day

Maybe it's time to move this to Civilized Debate so the thread starter will feel more at home
