I'm contemplating uninstalling all the AVG Freeware.It seems to be overloading this computer with updates,,updates,,and as anyone who has AVG knows,,,,,UPDATES

Very annoying.The timing of their UPDATES,,is fantastic for getting your attention.We all know why$$

This old machine has WinME OS and seems to be slowing down.
AVG is the only thing that keeps adding,,,,,,,,updates

Any advise will be appreciated before I wipe it clean and remove AVG.

Which AVG version do you have .. The newest free version is 8.0
You can set updates for once a day... That shouldn't be too annoying.
AVG may add some things occasionally .. but mostly, the updates are revisions to existing files.

I really doubt that AVG is the reason you're slowing down.
Anything you might replace it with, might be a lot worse.

I agree with Noyb I have AVG free and yes it does update all the time but it doesnt slow down my computer and its one of the best free anti virus out there.

AVG 7.5 updates every day and scans every day.Just pops up at the wrong time

There's very little in the "Virus Vault" and it's old.

The outdated Ad-Aware SE still finds more "bugs"

I might suggest installing and running the free CCleaner ... maybe daily.. it's really quick after you first run it.

This will probably remove a lot of the junk that ad-aware finds and scares you with.
It might also speed up your computer... after you clean out the trash.

Maybe I should mention ... If you have any saved passwords (Cookies w Passwords) ..
do NOT choose to clean your Cookies .. till we talk about this.

I would doubt avg 8.0 will work on Me as it is only for Sp2 and ahead in XP and the other day I could not install it to a Win 2000 pc with Sp4. I suggest you try Avira if you can't afford to buy an antivirus program: www.avira.com

Just a thought here, but if all that bothers you about AVG is what you consider constant automatic updates, and scanning, just go into the program, turn those functions off, and do them manually when you feel like it, that is what I do.

Double click AVG icon, that will bring up the AVG main window, on the left side of the window you will see scheduler, click it, the next window you will see is scheduled tasks window. Click once on Test plan in basic mode, it will turn highlighted blue, go to the bottom of the page, click Edit Schedule, untick periodically start scheduled antivirus test, OK it at the bottom of the page, and X out of the window. It is the same procedure with the Update plan in basic mode, click it once untill it turns highlighted blue, then edit the schedule at the bottom of the page, untick periodically check for internet updates, OK it at the bottom of the page, and X out. Over on the right side of the window it should say that those tasks are disabled. Now everything should be in manual mode, to update it manually, double click AVG icon, click on check for update, in the next window, click internet, and that will take you to AVG update, then you just tell it yes to the update. To run the test, just click scan computer. That should get you in the "ball park".

another free AV program ( I use it on an old 98SE laptop) is www.avast.com. It also will update automatically.
