Solved: AVG 8 takes 7hrs to scan
I have used AVG for several years happily. I upgraded to ver 8.0.138 recently.
AVG now takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours to scan my computer Win XP 1.2 GB RAM
55 GB HD with 36 GB used. That is on fast scan. It slows down my computer
to the point of annoyance. Is the time normal ? Any ideas how to speed it up ?

AVG 8 will scan more "deeply" so it's reasonable to expect the scan times to be longer. 6+ hours does sound excessive to me but if you've got 36GB of data, it just might need a lot of time to scan the system. Additionally, you using the system while it scans might slow the scan down a bit.

What speed CPU does your computer have? Can you schedule the scan to run over night, while you're not using the system? On the machines I've installed AVG on I schedule the scan to occur at 1 or 2am and I ask them to leave their machine on at least one night a week. This way, AVG will scan while they are not using the system and they won't want to terminate it due to system performance degredation from "spinning" the hard drive.

Another thing you can do is look at the scanning settings and maybe have it not scan compressed files or things like that. If you can schedule the scan to run when you're not using the system, I would recommend that.

Peace...

Running overnight is certainly an option. The length of time AVG is taking just seems to be excessive to me. AVG 7.5 scanned in 2+ hours. AVG 8 has found only tracking cookies and a false positive on a program written in Autoit.. I have excluded archives, photos, and some others.

Thanks for your input

Ok, then AVG 8 must be scrutinizing the other files you've got installed more closely, thus taking more time.

One thing I've noticed with AVG 8 is the number of files/objects scanned at the end of the scan is much LARGER than it used to be. I've seen AVG 8 take as long as 4 hrs to scan a system and it scanned well over 1 million objects.

Peace...

Also, just to point out, I ran AVG 8 on my brother's laptop and did a fast scan when there was only Windows installed, and it took 3 hours. Not to mention that happened on 7.5 too.
