 | Senior Member with 423 posts. | | | | Confused...do I get rid of ZA and update MS or ignore update and keep ZA I've been reading all these posts, and have been on the phone with Verizon last night for an hour, and again today for an hour to get connected to the internet. I first lost access to the internet when I downloaded that update KB951748. Today they were aware of the MS security update conflict with ZA. So I uninstalled the update and am not sure what to do next. I did not see any update for ZA in the link Cookiegal provided on the ZA page. I have WINS XP and am using a Linksys Broadband router. Not sure what to do next. Do I just leave my computer connected to the internet? Will I lose my connection again when I log off. I uninstalled the security update through my add/remove programs and still have ZA running. I'd appreciate any suggestions. | | Distinguished Member with 5,019 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Location: S.F. On that page, click "ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall" (if you're only using the free firewall) to download the ZoneAlarm update. Once downloaded, install it and you can then reset ZA back to the "High" setting in the Internet zone.
Peace... | | Senior Member with 423 posts. | | | | Ok I downloaded it. I have it set in ZA to high. But I still don't know if I should download that MS security update yet. Also the IE 7 browser no longer loads, says I am offline, however, I can upload the Firefox browser and get on the internet. | | Distinguished Member with 5,019 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Location: S.F. Go ahead and tell IE7 to go online if it thinks it's offline.

So there should be no need to uninstall the recent update, uninstall ZA or reduce the security setting in the firewall.
Anyway, that's the way I read it. I may be wrong though. | | Member with 30 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | If you go to the ZA website...they have a download to fix the problem w/the MS update..they give you directions how to remove the MS update..quite easy.. | | Senior Member with 102 posts. | | Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Bay Area Experience: Intermediate | | Note that for the moment, they are saying that Vista users are not affected by this glitch. | | Distinguished Member with 5,019 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Location: S.F. One the two machines I personally updated, I was able to access the web using Firefox, Opera, and IE7.
Peace... | | Senior Member with 423 posts. | | | | Well I have not reinstalled the MS update yet, and today when I went on my computer I could not get on the internet. I disconnected my router and shut off and shut on my modem and then I was able to connect. I have Verizon DSL, and twice I had to get on the phone with them for an hour each time so I could get connected again, and get my router working. I don't understand why I had problems again today if I don't even have that update installed. | | Distinguished Member with 4,901 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2002 Location: Birmingham, England |

#10 | The internet access problem caused by the MS patch was limited to the conflict with ZA which, if you have installed the newer version, is now fixed.
You definitely need that patch to be installed. Even though MS only classified it as 'Important' it fixes a potentially serious issue that could, in the worst case scenario, result in your computer being redirected to malicious sites; http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA08-190B.html

#12 | Ok I reinstalled the new ZA basic, with a clean install, I don't think I did this the last time. I installed the MS security updates too, and it all seems to be working ok now. However, the 1 update I've ignored is the Wins XP SP 3. Is this something I should install? Or should I just leave it alon? I have WINS XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP 2. | | Distinguished Member with 5,019 posts. | | Join Date: May 2006 Location: S.F. Bay Area, CA Experience: Intermediate |

#13 | SP3 is not related to the ZA issue at all. Some recommend AGAINST installing SP3 and others have gone ahead and installed it. I've installed SP3 on a few machines now and it seems to be working just fine for them.
"To SP3 or not to SP3...." I think that's a topic best left for another thread.
Glad ZA is now working for you.

#14 | For what it's worth, I don't believe you need SP3 now, although you will possibly need it to collect updates when SP2 is deemed to be at the end of its 'life' which, apparently, is one or two years after the issue of its successor, SP3. I hope that's clear!!
Personally, I won't be installing it because I don't want every patch that has ever been issued for XP. I use the 'Custom' option for updates and refuse lots of stuff I don't want or need.
Apparently, anybody that allows Automatic updating will soon be getting SP3 (if they haven't already got it) .
